RAD-AID Volunteer Medical Trip

What is YOUR passion? Following Premier League Soccer? Collecting vintage books? Running marathons?
My passion is seeing the world. I have a relentless desire to experience the unknown and gain knowledge about people and places far removed from little Rocky Gap, VA. This curiosity surely had some part in my decision to be a radiologist - getting to see the most fanscinating medical dilemmas that pass through the hospital.
As my journey of formal education begins to come to a close with the end of my fellowship, I realized that I wanted my wanderlust to have meaning to not just myself but to others. Seems easy enough for a doctor to do right? Well...turns out us radiologists are not particularly useful without the technology used to facilitate out skills. Thus, leading me to RAD-AID, the only medical volunteer organization aimed at providing and increasing accessibility to medical imaging.
It can be easy to take for granted in a country where ultrasounds to see your baby, CT scans for your belly ache and mammograms screening for breast cancer are routine; however, in developing countries, having a single ultrasound machine can be life changing.
In 2015, my new friend, Dr. Robin Sobolewski, began an initiative in developing imaging access in Cape Verde, a small island group off the coast of northwest Africa, by receiving a grant for an ultrasound machine.
I feel so fortunate to be a part of this year's team that will continue her efforts to grow their radiology resources.
Our group of 6 is small consisting of sonographers and 3 physicians but we hope to have a BIG impact!
Any donation you can spare would be a blessing and will be used to help pay for travel expenses for our spring 2016 mission.
My long term goal is to continue to have a regular role in RAD-AID by amplifying the Cape Verde program and hopefully expand to other developing countries with limited access to medical imaging.
