Racheal walked into Jersey City Medical Center one day in November with a cough and shallowed breathing. We were shocked to learn that a mass had developed in her lung and had spread to other areas of her body. Much to our surprise, she was diagnosed with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) a few days later. In stage IV, the cancer has metastasized, or spread, beyond the lungs into other areas of the body.
In the past three months, she has had three surgeries. Her severe back pain was addressed with spine surgery. A procedure called a kyphoplasty was done where the surgeon inserted cement into her degenerated disks and rods were placed for stabilization. Just as she was being discharged from the hospital post-surgery, her femur on her right leg broke as she got into the car right in front of the hospital. Upon further X-rays and scans, it was discovered that her arm also had a cancerous tumor so for her next surgery, Racheal received a 2 for 1 special.
She gained the strength through love and prayer to be discharged from the hospital just before the Christmas holiday weekend and got to spend it at home back in Jersey City with Terry and Elle.
At this point, she has had several targeted radiation treatments and just recently finished her third process of chemotherapy.
With metal pins in her left arm (Racheal is left-handed) and the deterioration of her pelvis, this cancer has jeopardized her life's career making beautiful people feel even more beautiful. She is deeply saddened to leave her clients, some who have become part of her family for the last 20 years since engaging her profession in 1999.
Enduring in a few short months what some people may experience in multiple lifetimes, she is about to turn 38 years young in just a few days. She wants to spend the reminder of the time she is so blessed to have to create memories with and for her daughter.
The most recent medical update is that through genetic testing, the team at Memorial Sloan Kettering has been able to identify the NRG-1 gene as the source of the mutation. With this new information, Racheal has selflessly agreed to contribute to further research as this is a rare tumor type. She is one of only five people in this cohort being followed and the team is hopeful that her contribution will inspire more research into this particular kind of targeted therapy.
If you know Racheal, you know that she’s a fighter. She is strong, resilient, and resourceful all while also being gentle, loving, and kind. She is a lover of life, rainbows, and unicorns.
She has a tremendous passion for life but has not been able to work since November. We are raising funds to help Racheal manage during this time. Not only will she need assistance with medical bills and treatment expenses, but we want to give Racheal the best chance possible to heal her body and maintain her amazing spirit without the additional burden of financial need.
