Rachael's 100,000 Steps 4 Rushmoor Healthy Living

Tax deductible
During the week of 28.11.20 to 4.12.20 I am aiming to walk over 100,000 steps in aid of RHL – an amazing charity which is not only helping thousands of local residents, but which also transformed my life at a point when I was really struggling.

My challenge…
My normal weekly step count averages about 42,000 so getting to 100,000 steps is going to be a huge challenge! RHL’s normal Xmas fundraising activities had to be cancelled due to Covid, but in my attempt to raise money in place of this, I’ve probably not chosen the best time of year for going out walking! – if you see me out in torrential rain and howling winds then please give me a wave and some encouragement!

I would really appreciate it if you would sponsor me – every little helps – so if you are able to donate, whether it be a small or large amount, thank you so so much!

How RHL helped me…
After my son was born my Epilepsy kicked off – I’d never had a fit before and suddenly I was having fits in the day, in the night and lots of absence seizures (where you forget what you were saying). I was also experiencing drop seizures where you just drop to the floor - particularly embarrassing in the alcohol aisle in Tesco! My memory was shot to pieces with the brain damage, I needed full time carers and I could barely string 3 sentences together. I was a mess! RHL helped me get into volunteering when my Epilepsy was really bad and my confidence was at my lowest. I can honestly say, that was the start of me getting my life back together! Fast forward a few years and although I am still struggling with my epilepsy, and carers are still a vital part of my life, I have a part-time job with RHL and absolutely love helping others to get through their own challenges.

RHL…
RHL runs a wide range of different projects which support local residents to improve their physical health, mental well-being and quality of life, whilst reducing social isolation and loneliness. The projects we offer are so important for people who are finding it hard, often through no fault of their own. As I found out myself, you can easily become so isolated when something unexpected happens or your health changes. Our activities really help people to get out of the house and meet other people (even if it is virtually at the moment!).

I love our exercise and rehab class project which enables those with health conditions to take part in targeted classes and to meet others who have similar illnesses. I’ve made over 600 phone calls to RHL class members since June – I had one lady where I was the first person she had spoken to for 3 months! I am also really enjoying supporting others with long-term health conditions via RHL’s new ‘How are you today?’ project – I’ve been humbled by the many offers from professionals to volunteer their time to give talks to improve self-confidence etc and I’ve already seen how it is starting to make a difference to the project participants. I am also involved in RHL’s work with the Nepali community, particularly those who are elderly, have very low education levels and are struggling to engage in a community where they don’t speak the language and are often illiterate – even in their own language!
