Rachael Bodnar Leukemia Relief Fund

On Monday March 19, 2018 my sister Rachael Bodnar at the age of 24 years old was diagnosed with Acute T Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Her prenatal doctor explained to her that at 24 weeks of pregnancy her white blood cell count was over 90,000 and that this cancer has invaded her lymph nodes and bone marrow.  She has been in the hospital for ten days now and has undergone her first of many chemotherapy treatments.  She will be in the hospital for the next couple of months until her child is born and she recovers from the delivery. 

Her obstetrician is optimistic that her baby will be unaffected by the chemotherapy and will be born healthy.  We anticipate that her baby will be induced between 30 and 32 weeks before she starts her second round of chemotherapy. After Rachael is discharged from the hospital she will be adjusting to the responsibilities of becoming a mother and is also uniquely challenged with the burden of coping with leukemia. 

My family is doing everything that we can to help Racheal put the pieces back together and focus on improving her quality of life. Prior to this diagnosis, Rachael was struggling to make ends meet and was frequently calling off work due to illness. Her landlord refused her rent when she was hospitalized at the beginning of March and before checking into the hospital she was living from place to place. 

Rachael has a long road ahead of her and many battles to fight. According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society the overall recovery rate for ALL is 70%.
