<div>On July 13, 2023, my mom, Andrea Mercado, 63 years old, was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer, which has spread to the pleural region and her bones and spine. Due to the progression of the disease, my mom has lost a significant amount of weight, now weighing under 40kg (88 pounds), and is currently suffering severe pain in her back due to tumors in her vertebrae.

<div>Her treatment will consist of at least eight rounds of chemotherapy and possible hormone therapy to try to shrink the metastases and improve her quality of life, as well as possibly enable the effective removal of the large (7cmx7cmx5cm) main tumor mass in her left breast surgically afterwards.

<div>My mother is a retired widower with a minimum government pension in the Philippines and I am currently a fourth-year PhD student in Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois, being the main source of income for my family. Unfortunately, with my graduate student stipend and her small pension, we cannot afford the tests, procedures and hospitalizations required for treatment. She currently has a PhilHealth coverage which is a government-mandated healthcare coverage but it will only give us up to P 100,000 (about 1,800 USD) for the whole course of treatment. Tragically, my father also passed away last year. Beyond the sadness of the loss, this also wiped my life savings before grad school, as I covered his funeral costs and other costs related to his passing.

<div>Being an only child and having already lost my father, I wish to give my mom the best possible shot at survival despite our severe financial limitations. My mom is the only family I have left in this world and I really hope we can make sure she will be able to share my life's milestones with me (like finishing my degree, getting married and having kids). I grew up in a very modest household, so when I got the opportunity to pursue my doctorate four years ago, I set out with the dream of improving the life of my family back home. While my father will not be able to see me finish my degree and share that joy with me, I have set up this fundraiser for my mom's treatment to give her as much time as possible to enjoy her beautiful life and allow me fulfill my dream and promise to improve her quality of life with my work while I still can

<div>No dia 13 de Julho de 2023 a minha mãe, Andrea Mercado,  de 63 anos, foi diagnosticada com câncer de mama em estágio quatro, que já se espalhou pela pleura (região que envolve os pulmões) e seus ossos e espinha dorsal. Devido à gravidade da doença, minha mãe já perdeu muito peso (agora pesando menos de 40 quilos) e está com fortes dores nas costas por causa dos tumores nas vértebras. O tratamento previsto no momento consiste em ao menos 8 sessões de quimioterapia e, possivelmente, hormonioterapia para tentar reduzir as metástases e melhorar a sua qualidade de vida, assim como possibilitar a posterior remoção do grande (7x7x5 centímetros) tumor principal em sua mama esquerda.

<div>Minha mãe é uma viúva aposentada com a aposentadoria mínima do governo das Filipinas e eu estou no quarto ano do meu PhD em ciências agrícolas na universidade de Illinois em Urbana-Champaign, sendo a principal fonte de renda da minha família. Infelizmente, minha bolsa de doutorado e a pequena aposentadoria dela são insuficientes para cobrir os custos dos testes, procedimentos e hospitalizações necessários para o seu tratamento. As Filipinas não tem um Sistema Único de Saúde como o Brasil, tendo  um seguro saúde governamental chamado PhilHealth com cobertura limitada para cidadãos idosos. Ela tem cobertura por esse plano, que infelizmente só cobriria até U$1800 dólares (aproximadamente R$8600) por todo o tratamento, o que infelizmente está bem aquém do custo estimado para o tratamento.  Tragicamente, meu pai faleceu ano passado e, além da tristeza desta perda, toda a minha poupança que havia acumulado antes de começar meu doutorado teve de ser usada para cobrir os custos funerários e legais relacionados à sua morte.

<div>Como filha única e já tendo perdido meu pai, quero poder dar à minha mãe a maior chance de sobrevivência apesar das nossas severas limitações financeiras. Ela é a única família que me resta neste mundo e eu quero muito poder compartilhar com ela os próximos grandes marcos da minha vida, como obter meu doutorado, me casar e ter filhos. Minha família sempre foi muito humilde então, quando tive a oportunidade de fazer um doutorado nos EUA há quatro anos, parti das Filipinas com o sonho de melhorar as condições de vida da minha família através do meu trabalho e dos meus estudos. Embora, infelizmente, meu pai não possa mais compartilhar a alegria da conclusão do meu curso comigo, eu espero que, por meio desta campanha eu consiga financiar o tratamento da minha mãe e dar a ela o máximo de tempo possível para viver a sua vida e me ajudar a realizar meu sonho (e voto) de melhorar a vida dela através do meu trabalho enquanto eu ainda posso fazê-lo.
