Malaika is a 20-something university student living in Ottawa. At the young age of 6 years old, she was subject to female genital mutilation (FGM) at the hands of community members while on a trip to Somalia with her family. FGM is a procedure that intentionally alters/ causes injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The procedure, often carried out by mass to minors without consent,  offers no benefits and can cause severe bleeding, problems urinating, and later cysts, infections, amongst others.

Now older and able to understand the impact that this procedure has had on her life, Malaika is aiming to reclaim power over something taken away from her without her consent. In an effort to bring more awareness to the practice of FGM in communities around the world, Malaika did an interview with Toronto Star reporter Jayme Poisson (link above). Through an intense and continuous research, she was able to come across Clitoraid.  Clitoraid is a private non-profit organization whose goal is to help FGM survivors who want to have their clitoris rebuilt. This procedure will allow Malaika to not only rebuild her clitoris but also give her a new lease on life after over 15 years of trauma.

As the procedure is offered pro bono (the patient must only pay a downpayment and for the surgery room), candidates are placed on a waitlist that can be as long as two years. By donating to this GoFundMe, we assure all donators that their donations will be strictly deposited in an untouchable savings account that will only be accessed upon surgery.

I, Yasmin Mumed will be collecting the funds for Malaika's trip. Malaika and I have connected through instragram after she read my article on FGM, and became very close. We have based our goal off of a budget that includes...
500$ downpayment for the surgery
1700$ for the surgery room
1500$ for travel expenses (this includes roundtrip tickets for Malaika and her accompanying friend as well as travel around San Francisco for the two week stay)
2500$ for room
1000$ for food
200$ for medication

We thank everyone for any possible contribution and hope that Malaika's story will raise awareness to FGM and help other survivors come forward to help in the fight against such a violation of human rights.

"FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women. It is nearly always carried out on minors and is a violation of the rights of children. The practice also violates a person's rights to health, security and physical integrity, the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and the right to life when the procedure results in death." (2017, World Health Organization)
