Jack Ryan is a beloved son, brother, grandson, and nephew. He just turned 12 and loves all things superheroes. He plays basketball, rides a mountain bike, and enjoys hiking with his family in his home state of Washington.

On Friday, July 2nd, Jack was taken to the emergency room with extreme head and eye pain. The doctors ordered a CT scan and discovered a 2.5-centimeter tumor in the pineal area of his brain. Jack was transported by ambulance to one of the best children’s hospitals in the Pacific Northwest and was immediately taken into surgery. This first procedure was successful and helped alleviate some of the pressure behind his eyes.

Pathology reports confirmed that the tumor is a form of germ cell cancer, but that it has not metastasized into his spinal cord. Due to hydrocephalus, a blockage in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, an endoscopic third ventriculostomy was scheduled for Tuesday, July 6th. (This surgical procedure would have redirected the cerebrospinal fluid to another area for reabsorption.)

However, in the early hours of Monday, July 5th, Jack’s condition deteriorated; updated scans showed that the tumor had doubled in size in just 48 hours. He was once again rushed into emergency surgery. During the 8+ hour procedure, doctors were able to remove some of the tumor, but not all. And because of increased blood in the area, his chances of having a stroke have multiplied.

At this point, we are uncertain whether additional surgeries will be required. Current plans include 5-6 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to treat the remaining tumor.

While his family does have medical insurance, out-of-pocket costs will be staggering. We humbly ask for your help and support during this difficult time. Any donation or prayer on his behalf is much appreciated.
