Service Dog for Paula

Donation protected
Short version:
I am Paula Offutt, a person with a disability. I am wanting to obtain a Rottweiler puppy to train as my Service Dog (SD) as well as rebuild our dog fence. I have trained my own SD before (she was also a Rottweiler) and am eager to do it again! I miss having a constant canine companion. It is my hope to get some help with the funding of the pup and the cost of the fence.

Update: Pup will not be born until sometime this fall but fence will need to be built this spring or summer.

Long version:
I am Paula Offutt. I am a dog lover, writer, and a person with a disability (PWD). In 1999, I decided to train my own Service Dog (SD). I researched it, determined my needs, and started looking for a dog that was a natural retriever. And that's how I met Joella, a Rottweiler, in 2000. Jo and I had over 11 great years together! She's been gone for over two years now and I miss having a constant companion and helper.

After researching again, I determined my needs to be:
- a natural retriever or a breed of dog that tends to be retrieving friendly.
- a big dog. Various reasons but one being I have forearm crutches that often need picking up.
- a dog vs a mechanical reacher because a reacher can't lick my face when I am depressed or give me a reason to get out of the house or wake me when the alarm goes off or any of the other numerous things I need a service dog for including going to the other room to get my shoes!

I have researched breeders now for close to two years. I have chosen an individual who is a well-known and respected breeder of her Rottweilers. They are raised indoors and get used to the activities of a household. She handles and works with them daily. I decided to go with Rebekah James and Redyre Rottweilers.

Then comes in the other part of this endeavor. Our dog fence. Beginning two summers ago, the maple tree began dropping limbs and taking out parts of the fence. At first, we were able to patch it but then a huge limb fell. It took out the gate and an entire section beside it. There was nothing we could do. We closed off the lot just beyond the end of the dog ramp.

Current plans are for the porch to be extended to cover the concrete steps and will have a wheelchair ramp going out into the yard (not into the dog lot). The lot will be around 75x35 feet square. This includes replacing the existing fence currently still in use.

Any funds left over will go toward the health care at Charlotte Street Animal Hospital.
