COVID-19 & La Tortuga Feliz
La Tortuga Feliz is a turtle conservation program based in Costa Rica, whose purpose is the protection of sea turtles with the help of volunteers. By helping to generate an income for the locals through an affordable turtle volunteer program, our aim is to take away the necessity for them to poach the turtles and their eggs.
In the absence of international volunteers, key staff and locals have been working tirelessly at patrolling the beach for nesting turtles as well as monitoring the hatchery on greatly reduced salaries. These efforts, so far, have resulted in over 2000 leatherback hatchlings being released safely in to the ocean!
With green turtle season just starting we are facing a very alarming situation as this endangered species is hunted and killed by poachers.
With many job losses in Costa Rica, due to the pandemic, we are anticipating more poachers from the mainland to come to the beach for the valuable green turtle's meat and her eggs. It is of vital importance that our conservation efforts continue during this time.
We are 100% dependent not only on volunteers physical participation but also financial.
Our concerns, as always, are the turtles and local community at Pacuare that without your continued support will be severely impacted and it may result in us having to close.
We are reaching out with the hope that you can form a major part of the solution to this worrying problem.
We are mindful that you are also experiencing hardships and uncertainty and appreciate fully any help that you can offer.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We are hoping, with your generosity, to pay the local guides and operational costs for the next couple of months. This will allow us to continue to operate and patrol in order to prevent many endangered green turtles being killed.
From all at Pacuare, we wish you and your families the very best during this time and take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for considering supporting our efforts.
P.S. As this platform is not available in Costa Rica we had to arrange it through the UK.
