I am Jaime A. Chavez, 34 years old and living with Scleroderma.
Scleroderma slowly took over my existence at the young age of 30, in the prime of my life. I started having early symptoms of fatigue, coldness in the fingers and sensitivity to the cold weather. I had an overall feeling of unbalance. Shortly after the birth of my youngest daughter, this disease started to take its toll on me, physically and emotionally. I started losing weight and my fatigue got more extreme than usual. I couldn’t exert myself in any form of physical activities or eat foods that I normally could. After countless visits with doctors, blood work, exams and taking various medications, I was finally diagnosed with Systemic Sclerosis “Scleroderma” in the winter of 2014. Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease that affects the thickening of the skin and internal organs.
Scleroderma has shown to be a worthy opponent, as it advanced aggressively in 2015. Causing pulmonary hypertension in the lungs, an oversized heart, excessive fluid retention throughout the body, muscle weakness, gestational digestive issues, and mal-nutrition, just to name a few. With numerous visits to the emergency room and two very long hospitalization stays; it has robbed me of my life with the people I love the most. I am truly blessed and grateful for my two beautiful daughters and my wonderful wife. Who has been with me side by side through this horrible journey. There is no cure for this disease but my positivity, faith and family is what helps me fight this battle every day. For those who know me and my family, know we have had our share of difficult and trying times. We will prevail like we have so many times before. I will not let this disease get the best of me. I am here strong as ever, and will come out as a champ.
