Empowering the Elderly
Donation protected
The local issue that our project aims to address is elderly isolation. Most senior citizens placed in retirement homes have little to no contact with the outside world. 40% of staff in one study reported committing at least one instance of emotional or psychological abuse against residents, making them feel unwanted and isolated. As students we recognize the depression within our school and want to investigate beyond the borders of our school campus. This issue is important because the entire community must come together, no matter what age. We want to support this cause by raising money for senior homes that will use those donations for community engagement projects (philanthropy). Also, visiting the senior homes to make jewelry with the residents will serve to connect the elderly both physically and emotionally (volunteer work). Lastly, we will advocate the issue of elderly isolation through social media and fundraising (advocacy). We choose to include all three approaches because they work hand in hand with one another and utilizing different platforms can maximize support. Since we have a large group, we believe that power in numbers is important for our project and for outreach. Our plan creates a personal bond with the individuals at the retirement home, while also outreaching to others showing the loving personalities inside the home.
