R2Home - Guided Parachute Recovery System

ENGLISH VERSION BELOW - VERSION ANGLAISE EN DESSOUS

ENGLISH VERSION - VERSION FRANÇAISE AU DESSUS

Have you ever wondered how the weather forecast could be so accurate?

It is mostly thanks to thousands of weather balloons that are sent out every year to probe the atmosphere and conduct scientific experiments.

These weather probes, equipped with a simple round parachute, drift when they return to earth along the winds. They are often lost in the nature. If the probes are not recovered, their loss leads to economic losses, but also in the long term to pollution of the environment in which they land.

My name is Yohan, I am 17 years old and my goal for almost two years now is to solve this problem by designing a system that allows any payload, such as a model rocket or a weather balloon falling back to earth, to guide its fall.

Picture of one of the first prototypes, being tested in a "natural" wind tunnel.

THE PROTOTYPE :
To achieve this goal the system must be able to:

1. Deploy a parachute canopy
2. Control the parachute canopy to steer it to a point

The latest prototype (on the right on this picture) is today perfectly able to realize these 2 tasks!

Here is a quick demonstration video of this prototype :

WHAT WILL YOU HELP? :

The prototype that you saw in operation in the video bears well its name, it's only a prototype, it's 3D printed, uses low-cost electronic components, and would be not reliable enough to be used on a real mission.

For that, it would be necessary to have many machined metal parts and to acquire better quality components, which has its price.

Then, the only way to know if the system in its final version works is to test it, by dropping it from an altitude of several hundred meters. For that there are three solutions:

1. A drop from a weather balloon, up to 10km
2. A drop from a helicopter, up to a few hundred meters
3. A flight on a sounding rocket, up to 2km

Solutions 1 and 3 are currently the cheapest and simplest.

Finally, failure allows learning, and the development of the prototype today is completely based on past failures. However, when working with free fallings objects, failure leaves no place for chance, and failure can often be very expensive.

This is the main reason why I need your help today. It will help continue the development of the prototype in the long term, which is currently limited by the means available to a 17-year-old teen.

Your help will allow more precisely, if the total amount collected is :

> 500€ : to launch the design of the next prototype, automatic piloting and deployment at higher altitude and higher speed.
> 1000€ : to continue the project up to a flight proven prototype working autonomously at a low altitude

Thanks to your help, we already reached those two steps, thanks a lot!

> 2000€ : to prepare the design of the final system, and organise at least one high altitude test flight

So every help, even the smallest one imaginable, is a great help for the project!
