Jovan Ivkovic’s big heart and big dream deeply touched me and I wanted to share it with you and ask for help -
Jovan is incredibly talented shoe designer from my hometown, graduating from high school in 2021. His biggest dream has been to join Pensole Academy in Portland to learn from the industry’s best footwear designers and get prepared to apply for a formal design education in US.
However, there are no realistic ways for Jovan to earn what is required to afford studying abroad and he has been working summer jobs to afford colors and markers. I am determined to help him any way I can and my first goal is to raise funds to buy him a computer so that he can start digitalizing his work.
This brings me to you - for my birthday this year I created this page and would greatly appreciate your kind contribution to help Jovan’s dream come true. Any amount raised over the computer costs will go towards Jovan’s design education down the road.
Here is the story as told by Jovan:
I started playing basketball at the age of 8, at our local basketball club "Kotor". My love for the game, moves, defense and practice kept growing over time but my appreciation for the shoes and the design even more, to the point that it became my biggest passion.
When I got my first basketball shoe, LeBron 11 Away, I was so excited. The first time I practiced in them, I felt so special. I realized the true meaning of the shoes, the confidence you get when you put them on, the difference they make on the court in every move, jump, sprint. You feel invincible. It triggered my curiosity about manufacturing and deeper understanding of why some shoes are better than others. I started watching videos, documentaries, reading about insoles, outsole, materials. And from that the birth of my shoe designing life happened.
I got my second shoes, Kyrie 2 Omega. I was drawing them and LeBrons over and over. Every time I made small changes I was finding ways to integrate some of my own style. And those small changes evolved into my first shoe design. I inherited a talent and love for design from my father. After losing him two years ago, I began to express myself constantly through drawing, whether it was drawing shoes or painting. I felt I found the purpose in life. As Kobe said: ''The magic in life is finding what it is that you love. When you find that thing that you love then life makes sense." I started with some original designs and worked summer jobs to afford colors, markers and drawing books. I am hoping to be able to digitalize my designs once I can afford a computer and an equipment I need.
As you may have figured out from the story, I am a designer by heart and my biggest dream has been to study design in US and land a job with one of the big footwear brands. I understand that the road to success is not easy and I know I will have to work hard to master my designing skills, but I am determined to do whatever it takes to achieve my dreams. There are no realistic ways for me to earn what is required in my hometown to afford studying abroad but I will not give up. My father used to say “Keep your head up and work hard. Something great will always result from it.'' These are the words I live by, hoping to reach my dream to become a professional footwear designer one day.
