Help Zack Study in Norway

Help pay for my studies in Norway for the 2018-19 school year.

I have been accepted to study the Norwegian language and Nordic culture in Norway during the 2018-19 school year. Between my parents and myself we have nearly all the required funds but we are still about $8,000 short and we are required to have the full amount for the school paid by February.

Additionally, Norway requires proof of all fees having been paid prior to issuing a student visa.

About me: My name is Zachery Tillman and I was born and raised on Orcas Island, the largest island in the San Juan Archipelago in Northwest Washington State. I spent my first 16 years of life on a sheep farm, in the secluded hamlet of Doe Bay. The solitude of living on a farm, many miles from other kids my age, was difficult but I escaped into a world of creativity. I have been apprenticing under a wide range of master craftspeople throughout my life as well, stonemasons and tilesetters, woodworkers and bakers, finding myself progressively more enammered by the traditions behind the arts.

I am of primarily Nordic heritage and my father always told stories of his Norwegian and Finnish grandparents, their lives in Europe, and the hardships they overcame to come to America with nothing and build a life. This inspired a fascination with the art, architecture and lifestyle of the Norse people.

My great(x2) Grandmother Cecelia Olssen came to the US from Norway when she was young. She followed her father who was an Oregon logger. Cecelia's ship was wrecked by an iceberg on her way here and all the passengers and crew abandoned ship on to the iceberg, until they were fortunately rescued by a passing ship.

One of my early experiments in Nordic art.

After I graduated from high school I went on a month long backpacking journey across Finland, Sweden and Norway. Sitting on the bow of a boat racing into Lysefjorden one day I had a life altering moment - it became clear in an instant that my drive was to follow the paths of my ancestors, and to create and share artwork along the way. To spread the beauty that this amazing culture has to offer. My family went from hundreds of years of unnamed peasants to a family of teachers in only a few generations. I only see it appropriate to follow in their wake and do the same.

More recent portrait.

Since returning from Europe I have studied Nordic carving and stonework and continued to improve my work in ink and color. When the opportunity to apply to school in Norway came I submitted my application with high hopes, later finding out that I was accepted on December 20th of this year. Being given the privelage to study in Norway for a year is sincerely a dream come true, if you do so choose to assist me with my aspirations I would be fully-heartedly grateful.
