March 5th 2015 at 7:20 am my wife, Judy, of 41 years, mother of three great children and 11 awesome grandkids, fell into a self induced coma from a brain bleed and collapsed on our bed while getting ready to go to work. She was due to have lung surgury later on that very day to remove a spot on her left upper lobe, she never made it to her lung surgury, so she still has that spot on her lung.
But now she had an even more grave condition called an AVM (anterior venus malformation.) most people who get this die because of the short window of opportunity to relieve the pressure on the brain and drain away what blood had accumulated near the bleed site. In short, an AVM is a ball or knot of blood vessels that supply blood to the brain and then the veins (somewhat larger than the vessels) carry the oxygen depleted blood back through the body to be re-oxygenated and so on.
I was able to get her to the hospital within 30 minutes but by the time we got her into surgury over an hour had passed. Had she had a DNR( do not resesitate) order she would have passed away rather quickly. We were all so grateful that she didnt have one. She eventually did get the surgury she so desperately needed and she lay in a coma for two weeks, and was almost 2 months in an acute rehab facility.
Not even the Doctors new if she would make it.
Well.. thank God she did make it and has progressed as well as anyone could under these circumstances.
Along with her other issues such as diabetes, overweight, constant headaches, incontinance, coughing all the time, and her lung issue, her brain deficits are the most taxing.
You see, when they removed her AVM they had to remove some of her brain, mainly having to do with her memory. She has no short or long term memories. She also doesn't have the ability to make new memories either. It's like "Groundhog Day," where I have to remind her everyday what we're doing cause she has no idea. Some days she knows me, sometimes she doesn't. She still can't find our bathroom and its in our bedroom.. She ends up in the closet. She sometimes gets out of the house before I can get to her and walks down the sidewalk in her bare feet and sometimes even in the rain cause she has no idea where she is or what she's doing..
Since her condition, she has lost her job, lost her State Disability, lost her license, and according to her, her family!
We're asking for help for her so that I can get her pull-ups, diabetes supplies, and other items and meds she needs.
My whole family has contributed what they can and just need a little more help with some essentials while we wait for her Social Security to kick in, God willing.
