Future Film Director

My name is Monica Montejano, and in a few months I will be attending Webster University in Missouri to study film.  I am 18 years old and my life has been rough, but whose hasn’t?
My mom passed away from several illnesses when I was 9 and after that, my sister and I were homeless with my dad for awhile, moving around and living with other people because we couldn’t afford a home of our own – he was a farm worker and hardly made any money.  My sister soon left to move in with our older sister in our hometown but, very young, she started using drugs and failing in school.  Eventually, she was sent to live with our former foster parents in Missouri but, after awhile, she dropped out of high school and ran away to New York before she even turned 18 years old.  Through all of these things going on, my older brother was already in and out of jail by this time, since the age of 19.

Not a single person in my family was given counseling after my mom’s death.  In 2012, my dad and my uncle, along with a group of a few other immigrant farm workers, were stopped on their way to work and were deported back to Mexico. I haven’t seen my dad since.

Since losing my dad, I have lived with my former foster parents in St. Louis, Missouri.  They have helped me do so much since then, like getting me enrolled into good schools as I’ve been moving around with them, as well as giving me a roof over my head and helping me apply for colleges.  With two young daughters of their own, they cannot provide me with the financial aid that I need to go forward with my future college plans.

What I think makes me different from many people who have gone through similar things in their lives is that, after all of this, I am drug-free, I am alcohol-free, and I am going to be the first in my family to go to college. I am dedicated and I just can’t let this amazing opportunity get away from me!

This FundMe page is to help me go to college and become a film director, and so that, as my niece and nephews grow up, I will become a good influence for them. Between Webster's scholarships and work study, I need $10,600 to cover my freshman tuition.

Thank you!
