Psychology placement in Sri Lanka

Donation protected
I’m a student at Mount Royal University (MRU), currently in my last semester of the psychology program. I previously completed the Bachelor of Applied Child Studies Degree and obtained a Children’s Mental Health Certificate at MRU in 2013.  I intend to pursue graduate studies next fall. I hope to become a registered psychologist and want to work with children who have neurodevelopmental disorders, and/or have been impacted by trauma.  I have worked in various roles within child/youth development and behavioural therapy in schools, recreation, child care, and early intervention settings. Additionally, I volunteer as a research assistant in the Language Development Lab at MRU and as a group peer-support facilitator for abused women at Sagesse.

I now have an invaluable opportunity to use the above experiences and education in Sri Lanka. I will be boarding a plane to Sri Lanka to undertake a 5-week (July 23rd - August 24th 2018) voluntary advanced mental health placement with SLV – a UK based organisation that provides students and graduates with hands-on work experience abroad in the mental health sector.

I am hoping to raise money to cover a portion of the overall costs of around 6000 dollars (flights, visa, insurance, placement fees, spending money, programing/art supplies, travel vaccinations) for this trip. The goal of 2600 dollars will cover the placement fees ( due in May), which includes the homestay accommodation and meals during the work week, a certificate of learning, training, volunteer support, a team-building weekend, and a visa extension.  I greatly appreciate any kind of donation.

I am really looking forward to working in a completely new culture in a challenging environment and SLV’s focus on ethical and sustainable projects is something that really stood out to me about them. The fact that it is a work-experience placement and not a holiday is an important aspect of why I chose to apply to volunteer with them.

What will I be doing?

In clinical and community settings I will be able to help individuals who are at varying stages of recovery. As well, I will work with individuals with exceptional needs and teaching English in the community to children aged 3-12 and young adults aged 17-25. I will be running all project activities, working in a team with other volunteers and taking responsibility for using my skills to work in under-resourced centres. I will be working 5 days a week living like a local, travelling on local transport and staying with a Sri Lankan family.

Your support would mean the world to me!
