As my mother Patti used to say to her students in Art School…

“A purple sweater in the closet is no longer purple!”

“What do you mean?” her students asked in disbelief.

“Without light, there is no color,” she replied.

Uncovering the visceral power of color was her focus for 30 years whether it was designing banners for the Olympics, teaching illustration at the School of Visual Arts in NY or teaching future Art Directors at The American Film Institute in Los Angeles.

Ten years ago, her light flickered and the color she so loved began to slip away and fade from her life.  She suffered memory lapse, loss of direction, confusion, agitation and night terrors. A team of doctors from UCLA Alzheimers and Dementia Care Program diagnosed a degenerative disease called Lewy Body Dementia.
Teams of medical specialists work around the clock to fight this disease but a cure remains elusive. Robin Williams died from LBD as did Estelle Getty.

I learned some critical lessons during the time Patti suffered from Dementia.

First,  while LBD took her memory away, it did not take away her love.

Secondly, what matters is the present moment. Not yesterday, not tomorrow. Stay in the present.

Finally, Don’t correct her if she says something wrong. Just go with it and give her the dignity she deserves and believe it or not a lot of laughs will come out of improvising absurd situations.

Based on my award winning play, my film entitled, “Three Kings” deals with a dysfunctional family struggling to cope with the news that one of their own is rapidly disintegrating in front of their eyes.

“Three Kings” shows the human side of an imperfect family as they go through denial, resistance, disbelief, anger, laughter and finally acceptance of her fate. All wrapped within an Italian American Christmas Eve with the Feast of the Seven Fishes. (We didn’t cook quite that many)

I wrote and directed the film with my own savings but now my goal is to raise $5000 to finish the post-production process.

It requires hiring a picture editor, sound editor, doing ADR, hiring a composer, doing a sound mix, and finally creating the opening title cards and rear title crawl.

I believe I've told a story of a family who loves unconditionally and who, in the end, stays together and perseveres through the challenge of LBD.

One of the goals of the film is to raise awareness of the LBD and the growing epidemic of all forms of dementia with the hopes of eventually finding a cure.

Thank you for your time and consideration!
