Quinn Hurst Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Quinn Hurst is a 6 year old amazing little boy who was born with several unexpected medical complication.  He is about to undergo his 9th surgery with Dr. Palmer at Cook Children’s Hospital in Ft. Worth, TX.  Dr. Palmer is Quinn's pediatric urologist. This hospital is out of network for the Hurst family insurance so the out-of-pocket cost is going to be even higher than usual. They are already dealing with a large amount of medical debt from all his ongoing care and surgeries so we are hoping to help them out with your generous donation. Quinn currently has a vesicostomy where his bladder opens to the outside and freely drains into a pull-up or diaper. He will be having a procedure similar to the mitrofanoff, where they use a portion of his intestine and appendix to build a false bladder with a tunnel where he can catheterize through his belly button. The surgery will take 8-10 hours and has a long recovery period with semi-permanent drains. They will need to remain in the hospital for up to 2 weeks after surgery. Quinn will eventually need a kidney transplant, but this bladder reconstruction surgery must be in place first. Thank you to all our friends and family who have been praying for Quinn since he was born.

Here is a little background on Quinn's medical journey:
Quinn was born on 9/29/12 and spent 58 days in the NICU. He was transferred to OU Children’s Hospital 2 days after he birth so he could receive the care he needed. He was diagnosed with Posterior Urethral Valves (PUV) which caused him to not have the ability to urinate. This caused him to be unable to pass the amniotic fluid in utero, putting him into kidney failure and caused the nerves in his bladder to stop functioning properly. While doing X-rays, ultrasounds, and other testing on his kidneys it was discovered he also had a tumor pressing against his left kidney. When he was finally stable enough for surgery at 1 month old they determined the tumor was neuroblastoma, a rare form of pediatric cancer. He also had a vesicostomy placed to let his urine drain freely and a bone marrow biopsy. Due to his severe kidney issues, chemotherapy was not a viable option as it would’ve likely put him into full kidney failure. The Dr.'s at OU attempted to resect the tumor a couple of weeks later but were unsuccessful, as in doing so they would of damaged his left kidney. They were blessed to have a couple Moms whose children had neuroblastoma reach out to them and direct them to Dr. LaQuaglia at MSKCC in New York City. After multiple trips to NYC they were able to successfully remove his tumor on 7/12/13 after a 10 hour surgery. With continued follow up scans and care he is currently NED (no evidence of disease). His kidneys however have not faired as well and he had to have a vesicostomy replaced in October of 2014 which he currently still has. His right kidney has died and calcified leaving all the work to his left kidney which only functions at a minimal amount. He will need a kidney transplant though we are not sure exactly when, currently with diet and medications his Chronic Kidney Disease is fairly stable at stage 3-4. His urologist, Dr. Blake Palmer moved to Cook Children’s in Ft. Worth so we are now traveling there as we work towards a solution to his bladder issues. Due to his continued small stature and low weight stemming from his kidney issues he is on a high calories diet as well as formula and is followed by his endocrinologist. To date Quinn has received care at 5 hospitals, had 8 surgeries, 15 MRIs with sedation, countless X-rays, ultrasounds, and lab work, as well as seeing 5 specialists-urology, nephrology, oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology.
