<div>Chamo-me Diogo Augusto e sou jornalista freelancer.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Em Portugal, a lei europeia obriga à transparência.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Obrigado pelo teu apoio.

<div><strong>Who profits from everyone’s water? Help us find out</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>My name is Diogo Augusto and I am a freelance journalist. I am a part of an international consortium of journalists, with colleagues from Malta and Cyprus, that is investigating an essential issue: <strong>who is profiting from intense water consumption, a resource that belongs to everyone?</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>With the support of an international funding programme from JournalismFund Europe, the project “Profit in Every Drop” is identifying the companies that consumer more water resources in these countries and questioning whether they are being held responsible for the impacts caused by their activity, particularly in contexts of drought.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In Portugal, the law binds public entities to transparency. But the reality of it is different: out of the ten public water suppliers I have contacted, nine have refused to to release information even after CADA (the Portuguese entity that handles FOI complaints) ruled in favour of releasing this information.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This means that these public entities are ignoring their transparency obligations and refusing to be held accountable. Why are they putting up such a fight to release this information? That’s what we want to find out.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The next step is, therefore, to take this matter to court. But there is a problem: the costs associated with this decision weren’t included in the investigation’s budget.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>The is where your support can make a difference. </strong>This isn’t merely about accessing information, it’s a matter of public interest: in a country that is increasingly affected by drought, citizens have a right to know which companies consume more water and who pays the environmental cost for this consumption.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Without this scrutiny, there is no true accountability. Investigative journalism is facing enormous challenges: it is expensive, takes a long time and often does not offer financial return. Yet it is this type of journalism that underpins democracy by providing citizens the important information they need to make informed decisions.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Our goal is 2.500€, the amount that is needed to take this to court, handle legal advice fees, judicial fees and, eventually, appeals.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>By contributing, you will be helping to ensure that this investigation is not held up. And that transparency is not optional.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for your support.
