Queer Black Berkeley Scholar Robbed
Quijai is a 3rd year Molecular and Cell Biology Major & researcher at UC Berkeley, an artist, and community organizer. On Monday, October 1st Quijai came home from a microbiology midterm to discover their door kicked in, and the majority of their possessions stolen -- including all the art off their walls, their shoes, clothes, equipment and electronics. As a researcher and student, they rely on their laptop, camera, and other equipment to succeed and complete their academic work daily.
They were preparing to launch a sneaker customization project in spring 2019 to be presented to the YEN and YANG (Youth Empowerment Network and Youth Navigating Growth) and facilitate workshops on high school campuses in Oakland. This project is now severely delayed as all of their 30+ pairs of sneakers and supplies were stolen.
The estimated value of their stolen property is ~$10,000 (see police report below). This is a devastating hit to Quijai, and they currently have very little money to replace their things, let alone pay for basic necessities, as they are a low-income, full time student and researcher. They are hoping to use some of the money raised to relocate to Alameda ASAP.
