We are raising money for Joel's kidney donor, Chris.
Who better than Joel to tell his story about how Chris has helped him and why we should help Chris in turn.
"Hi, I’m Joel. I’m the kidney transplant recipient of my altruistic kidney donor hero Chris. After years of waiting, his kidney donation allowed me to have a successful kidney transplant operation on July 10th, 2018.
I’ve had a chronic kidney disease called IGA nephropathy since I was a baby fifty one years ago. When I turned thirty-five, my chronic kidney disease signs and symptoms came back. When I turned forty-eight, three years ago, I was diagnosed with end stage kidney disease. I started dialysis on April 1st, 2015 (April Fool’s Day)!
And I was in search of a living kidney donor since then.
The past three years have been a health and life struggle for me as a single father of two young kids working full time as a home health physical therapist.
I was really down when my fifty-first birthday came and went and I still had no matching donor.
After my third year on dialysis came and went on April 1st of this year, I was about to give up, and I was ready to throw in the towel and just do the best I can living on dialysis three times a week for the rest of my remaining years left.
Lo & Behold! On April 18th of this year, my living kidney donor Super Hero Chris, texted me and messaged me on FB messenger. We met the next night and I could tell that he was dead serious about donating his spare kidney to me ASAP!
In fact, he searched and found me and chose me, on purpose, to be the fortunate recipient of his precious life-saving spare kidney. And he had more of a sense of urgency to get it done ASAP!
Eighteen days ago, on July 10th, we had our life saving kidney transplant surgery. The very next day, I felt like a totally new person again!, like I was reborn. Today, we’re both recovering much better and faster than we anticipated.

Chris, my kidney donor Super Hero definitively deserves to be shown some kindness! He has sacrificed a lot for my sake.
Unfortunately, due to legal reasons, I’m forbidden to give Chris any money or material things.

My kidney donor Super Hero Chris sacrificed a lot to make this life saving kidney transplant surgery happen.
He purposely delayed his move back to Chicago for at least three months just to be able to donate his kidney.
His Kidney donation actually saved 4 lives. Thanks to the kidney paired exchange program (kidney swap program) at Methodist Transplant Hospital here in San Antonio, Texas.
After finishing a temporary job a few weeks after he was first cleared to donate, he purposely delayed his job search for at least four to five months just to donate his kidney
He’s got bills to pay so it’s been a struggle for him financially in the past three to four months, and he still needs to find a job when he goes back to Chicago, and we don’t know when he’s gonna get hired.
He’s a true hero, a living saint. He helps out his mom, his grandpa and his two brothers. He helps out others and will continue to volunteer to help out those who are marginalized.
Chris is definitely the most altruistic, self-less, compassionate, kind and generous person I’ve ever met!

As for me, he’s truly given me a second lease on life. He’s enabled me to to be off dialysis completely. YES!
He’s enabled me to live much longer, such that I am now even more certain that I can provide and guide my two young kids Simone and Anton. I am certain I will get them through middle school and high school and eventually, college because they have both been straight A students since first grade. And someday, I will also be able to enjoy my grandchildren. YES!
My kidney donor Chris has also enabled me to continue to contribute to my profession and help change my many patients’ lives as I’ve done in the past thirty-one years as a physical therapist.
