Looking for Help to Save Our Dad

Donation protected

On October 24, 2011 my family received grim news. Our father, Chris, was diagnosed with end stage liver disease.  He was informed that he would need a liver transplant. The doctor stated that without the transplant, Chris would not live much longer, his own liver too damaged to repair itself or function properly at this point. Since that time, Chris has complied with every order the doctors have giving him. He has made changes to his lifestyle, diet, and health habits in order to give himself the best chance for success that he can. We are very proud of how he has been taken care of himself and the family has been here to support him in every way we are able.

Chris has a wife, Lu-Ann, which he has been with for 22 years. They have 7 children and 12 grandchildren who love him dearly. Our family wants nothing more than for our dad to be healthy and able to be there for future birthdays, baseball games, cook outs, and holidays. To have a fighting chance for success we are asking for help from friends, family, and anyone willing to donate to Chris.

A liver transplant costs anywhere from $600,000 to $1.8 million. Fortunately, the insurance will cover most of the cost. However there are many different medical issues that must be addressed before our dad can even be put on the transplant list. He has been put through just about every medical test you can think of, from stress test to blood work to psychological evaluation and even a bone density test. Most of the issues the doctors wanted to address before Chris can be put on the transplant list have been taken care of already.

There is still one major hurdle to our dad being put on the liver transplant list, which is the only chance he has to have a successful outcome with his liver disease. He has some major dental work that must be done to insure that there is no chance of an infection after surgery or other treatments. This must be done before Chris can even be put on the list and insurance does not cover it, therefore it is the most immediate need.

There are also other small expenses that will be difficult for Chris to meet given that his illness renders him unable to work. Some of these other expenses include medical equipment for the home, such as blood pressure machine, hot packs, surgical gloves, medications, and even a hospital bed for the house. The transmission is shot in the car, and we need to be repaired or replaced so he can get back and forth to appointments.  With the illness he is not able to work, so even the monthly stuff is more than they can afford without his income.

Right now just to keep them in their house there is about $600 a month more than they have coming in to cover the basic needs.

All this will allow our mother and other family members to care for Chris after surgery and chemo like treatments the doctor wants to do while they wait for a liver on the list.

It has taken seven months to get to this point in the process, which is more time than the doctors originally gave Chris to live with his own liver. We are not done fighting. Please help our dad to get the care he needs. Whatever can be given is appreciated. Thank you for your time in reading this, we are forever grateful to all who help our family in this one of our darkest hours. We have made it this Far and now we are ask for any help we can get to keep going down the path toward recovery.
