My older brother Marti has spent a lifetime loving animals. I remember my entire childhood watching him light up everytime we saw a dog or cat.
He and his partner have spent years dedicating themselves to the care and welfare of rescue animals. Up until a few weeks ago, they were housing, providing medical care, and providing a home to over 18 dogs. This did not include the 2 goats, and the cats they also have on their property.
All of this care has been completely out of his own personal income. He has never asked for charity nor ever questioned what his mission was in life.
Marti always thought he would be outliving his pet family, and therefore was not completely prepared for an issue as large as that he has now.
My brother has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer of the lung. It has spread and he is dealing with an enormous amount of pain. Treatment has begun, but those treatments require him to travel 6 hours round trip throughout the week to get to Moffitt Treatment center in Tampa.
Being this ill, he has had to take a leave of absence from work, and that has halted the income he and his family depended on to survive.
Marti and Andy have managed to re-home many of their rescues, but still have at least 8 left to find homes.
These homing placements are time consuming and emotionally draining. These animals are family and he anticipated seeing them live their life until the end in the best manner possible.
Suddenly, he is left with his entire life savings being directed to his own medical care. Along with supporting the loss of his income, as he is unable to work and provide for his family. This illness is not curable, it is only treatable. HIs ability to return to employment is very unknown at this time.
The money we are asking to collect will be to assist him with these travel costs, medical costs, and the loss of his income. He is not the type of person to ask, so I am doing it for him.
Any proceeds my brother receives, and does not use, he will donate to the care of homeless and rescue animals.
I dont really know how to process all of this, but I know, when we were little, and he would bring home that little weak animal to heal, I knew the size of his heart is bigger than any person I have met.
I dont want to see whatever time he has left, spent scared of how to deal with these high medical costs. It would be nice to see him concentrate on his well being versus how to eat and pay the mortgage.
