QoQo Love: a wise woman, a dear friend, a teacher, an artist, a mother and sister to many. She brings light, love, compassion and a deep knowing to the people who surround her. When you encounter Qo, you feel intrinsically how much she has given of herself over the course of her life to care for and support others -- her family, of course, and also her neighbors, her wider community, the people she has worked with in her career as a case manager and career coach.
Now it is our turn to return that light and love, that compassion, care and support to Qo.
QoQo has breast cancer. The tumor is in her left breast. It is not lost on Qo or those of us who are close to her that this tumor is over her heart. This heart that has been the source of profound love, wisdom and charity for others over decades; a heart that has been challenged with the deepest grief and loss as her life was turned upside down in recent years.
Upside down from the diagnosis, yes, alongside a series of events in the last few years of her life that have taken from her nearly everything she has held dear. Qo prefers privacy with these aspects of her story in this public forum. For this space, we will simply say that she has faced and continues to face death and loss in every aspect of her life. While she is hesitant to name it, Qo and many of us around her are aware that much of what she has faced has been due to or magnified by being a black woman living in a time and place in which we continue to struggle for racial and gender equity.
At this point in her journey, QoQo is reclaiming her life and it begins with her health. Qo has been treating the breast cancer on her own holistically for several years. She is now considering doctor's' recommendations which include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. She is also considering other forms of holistic care that are not covered by U.S. medical insurers. Like all of us, she has the everyday expenses of maintaining her home as well as all of the expenses that come with restoring her health like high-quality food, self-care needs, transportation to and from appointments, more.
In order to make the best choices for her health and move forward with her life, Qo needs the support of her community. A team of us have joined together to raise funds for QoQo as well as provide other forms of support you can read more about on the Caring Bridge site. The main priority now is raising $25,600 in order to provide a base of financial support that can hold QoQo for the next 6 months while she is on this journey of wellness and reclamation.
Please be as generous as you can be. Consider from your own heart if this was your sister, your mother, your daughter, your dearest friend, your co-worker, your neighbor, someone you have held dear and who has held you in more ways than you can know. Consider what you feel is reasonable for you to give within your means and then consider doubling it. We are in a season of giving, of acknowledging the abundance we have and sharing our blessings with others, knowing our generous acts will return to us many times over.
