A future for the children of Dharavi, the largest slum in India
Like any exciting story, ours too started with an unexpected encounter, which took place a few years ago in the streets of Mumbai. The story of a friendship between Ilich Rausa, founder of the independent label Rude Records, who landed in India after reading Shantaram, and Rahul Devaliya, an Indian young man who was an enterprising tour guide in his home town before Covid-19.
A few years have passed since this meeting, during which Ilich and Rahul have remained in touch. During one of their conversations, the idea of starting a collaboration was born and they wanted to carry out some projects to support the population of the largest slum in India, Dharavi.
Earlier this year, following the initial project that aimed at providing help to families in the slum who remained unemployed during the pandemic, Ilich and Rahul decided to continue their collaboration, giving life to a new and ambitious project to bring new light to one of the poorest neighbourhoods in India.
As a result, "Education for the Future" was born, an initiative that aims to offer school support to children and teenagers of Dharavi, where about one and a half million people currently live in conditions of extreme poverty and where also Rahul is from.
“Education for the Future” was launched in February 2021, thanks to the support of Rude Records and the precious collaboration of Rahul, who was strongly driven by the desire to help out children in his neighbourhood. The project offers a complete education support and tutoring program, with the intention to help reinforce the Indian school system, which is often overloaded and characterized by an excessively high dropout rate.
So far, a location has been rented inside the slum where two tutoring classes of over 20 students each are alternated, the first is for children between 6 and 11, the second for children aged 12 to 16. The lessons are supervised by Uruvi and Minaxi, two experienced teachers from the neighbourhood who spent years in educational programs, and who have a deep awareness of the needs and difficulties of Dharavi's students.
Currently, we can guarantee completely free school support to over 40 children with less than 1000 euros per month, a figure that includes the rent of a room, teachers' salaries and remuneration as a supervisor in Rahul. This is already a great help for these young people and the whole community, but we would like to do much more.
100% of the funds raised through this crowdfunding will be donated to the project to expand its effectiveness. The main expenses that donations will help cover are
· The purchase of books and school supplies for all less well-off children
· The establishment of at least two additional classes with two new Tutors
· The rental of a larger structure with sufficient capacity for each class
· The supply of desks, chairs, blackboards for each class, together with other material necessary for regular school activities.
“Education for the future” aspires to provide support to children and young people as well as to support the community of Dharavi in general. Therefore, both the supplies of school materials and the collaborators involved will be local.

Come ogni storia interessante, anche la nostra nasce da un incontro inaspettato, avvenuto qualche anno fa tra le strade di Mumbai. È la storia dell’amicizia tra Ilich Rausa, fondatore dell’etichetta indipendente Rude Records, approdato in India dopo la lettura di Shantaram, e Rahul Devaliya, un ragazzo indiano che fino a prima del Covid-19 era un’intraprendente guida turistica nella sua città natale.
Da questo incontro sono passati alcuni anni, durante i quali Ilich e Rahul sono rimasti in contatto, ed è proprio durante una delle loro conversazioni che nasce l’idea di avviare una collaborazione per realizzare alcuni progetti a sostegno della popolazione del più grande slum dell’India, Dharavi.
Nel 2021, dopo un primo esperimento portato avanti nel pieno dell’emergenza sanitaria Covid-19 e volto a fornire un aiuto alle famiglie dello slum rimaste senza occupazione, Ilich e Rahul hanno deciso di portare avanti la loro collaborazione, dando vita a un nuovo ed ambizioso progetto con l’obiettivo di portare nuova luce in uno delle zone più povere dell’India.
Così è nato “Education for the Future”, iniziativa che si propone di offrire supporto scolastico a bambini e ragazzi di Dharavi, uno dei più grandi slum al mondo, dove attualmente vivono circa un milione e mezzo di persone in condizioni di estrema povertà e dove, peraltro, Rahul è cresciuto e vive.
Il progetto è partito nel mese di febbraio 2021, grazie al sostegno di Rude Records ed alla preziosa collaborazione di Rahul, il quale si è messo in gioco in prima persona per dare una mano ai ragazzi del suo quartiere. “Education for the future” offre un programma completo di supporto allo studio e di tutoring, allo scopo di affiancare e sostenere il sistema scolastico indiano, spesso sovraccarico e caratterizzato da un tasso di abbandono troppo alto.
Sono stati affittati dei locali nel centro dello slum dove si alternano due classi di tutoring da oltre 20 studenti ciascuna, la prima dedicata ai bambini dai 6 agli 11 anni, la seconda dedicata a ragazzi dai 12 ai 16. Le lezioni sono seguite da Urvi e Minaxi, due insegnanti del quartiere con esperienza pluriennale in programmi d’educazione, e che conoscono molto bene le esigenze e le difficoltà dei ragazzi di Dharavi.
Attualmente, siamo in grado di garantire supporto scolastico totalmente gratuito a oltre 40 ragazzi con meno di 1000 euro al mese, cifra che include l’affitto di un locale, le retribuzioni delle insegnanti ed il compenso come supervisore a Rahul. Tutto ciò rappresenta già un grande aiuto per questi ragazzi e per tutta la comunità, ma vorremmo fare molto di più.
Il 100% dei fondi raccolti con il crowdfunding sarà devoluto al progetto, con lo scopo di ampliarlo ed incrementarne l’efficacia. Le principali spese che le donazioni contribuiranno a coprire sono, tra le altre:
· L’acquisto di libri e materiale scolastico a tutti i bambini meno abbienti
· L’istituzione di almeno due classi aggiuntive e di due nuovi Tutor
· L’affitto di una struttura più grande con capienza sufficiente per ogni classe
· La fornitura di banchi, sedie, lavagne per ogni classe, insieme con altro materiale necessario alla normale attività scolastica
Education for the future non aspira solo a fornire un supporto a bambini e ragazzi, ma si propone di sostenere più in generale la comunità di Dharavi. Pertanto, sia le forniture di materiali scolastici che i collaboratori coinvolti saranno locali.
