HELP SAVE OUR REGIONAL LANGUAGE!
Martha Barnette, co-host of “A Way with Words,” put it this way:
“Recently in the language world, something happened that might be described as the Super Bowl, the Olympics, the Fourth of July, New Year’s, three scoops of ice cream, and a new kitten all rolled into one…I’m talking about the fact that the magnificent six volume Dictionary of American Regional English is now available online.”
But lack of funding for DARE threatens to stop the project in its tracks. Without significant new resources, all but one staff member must leave.
As reported in Time , the Boston Globe , the New York Times , the Huffington Post , and the Guardian, closure would halt not just the ongoing recording of changes in American English, but the effort to create an API for DARE that would make its treasures available through various apps, and the project to anonymize DARE’s collection of 1,843 audio recordings so that they can be freely available.
Please consider donating so that DARE can continue to record and celebrate the diversity of our American dialects.
Joan Houston Hall, Chief Editor, DARE
All proceeds will go to the Dictionary of American Regional English. For other ways to contribute, please go here .
