DENTAL DAMN-IT: a Medical/Dental Fundraiser for Lilac Vylette Maldonado
Salutations,
My name is Lilac Vylette Maldonado (she/they) and I identify as a low-income, sick, disabled, and neurodivergent, queer, two-spirit, trans, Chicanx femme. I have been organizing in grass roots movements since 2009. I am a co-founder and core team member of the Los Angeles Spoonie Collective, a facilitator for and team member of Fireweed Collective , and a longtime DIY zinester & multimedia artist.
I have dedicated my life to community organizing and activism, and have given my time, labor, and resources to uplift my communities, but in this moment I am asking community to help uplift me as I struggle to access some basic needs. As a multiply marginalized individual, I find myself in a vulnerable position financially and now emotionally as I trust in the culture of community care I have wholeheartedly fostered, and ask you, my community for help.
I am asking for assistance in reaching my goal of $3K in order to finance an urgently needed dental procedure for a crown and four bonds (Denti-Cal won't pay for any of it, and my tooth is broken), buy an air purifier (for wildfire smoke and because I live 30 yards from the 405 freeway, near an airport and a large factory), and ramps for my home (so I can access my bedroom and kitchen with my powerchair).
We all deserve the access to free medical and dental care, clean air to breathe, and physical access to the spaces we dwell in, but our very broken system that promises to provide for and protect us, actively neglects and oppresses us. As someone who navigates a complex set of privileges and points of marginality, I am aware that our lives, and certainly our social media feeds, are saturated with folks in need asking humbly for your already limited resources, yet I hope that you are able to lean into our shared values of Disability Justice & Kyriarchal Feminism, and give as you are able or share this with your networks.
