Grimsby Water Rats Junior Channel Relay Team

This fundraising page is in support of the QEGS Charity Channel Relay 2020. To help fund the QEGS English Channel Relay challenge, support the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust and a Legacy Adventure Fund for QEGS students.

Considered the ‘Everest of Open Water Swimming’, as more people have climbed Mount Everest than have swam the English Channel, a relay team from Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School Horncastle will be attempting to swim the 22 miles between Dover and France, across the English Channel in July 2020. Each swimmer will take it in turn to swim the channel for an hour in rotation, until they reach France. Swimming the English Channel will take the team across the busiest shipping lane in the world, a relay team on average takes around 14 hours. The QEGS Relay team will comprise of staff member, Jo Fieldsend and student swimmers, Georgia Barnett, Max Marritt, Carter Vernon, George Vickers and Alex Parker (from King Edward VI Grammar School, Louth) . The team members will be aged between 15 and 18 at the time of the swim.
The approximate cost of the challenge is £5000, which includes all registration fees, the pilot for the swim and boat to accompany the team across, transport to Dover and accommodation whilst in Dover. All money donated through this page will go towards supporting the team by reducing the cost of the trip for team members and to support the team’s chosen charities. The team has a number of fundraising activities planned throughout the year to raise money for the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust and a Legacy Adventure Fund for QEGS students..
The students have been training hard since May and are prepared for a lot more hard work including at least one training session in the lake once a week, however what a journey they have ahead of them. It will be cold, there will be waves, jelly fish, they will start off swimming in the dark, and there will be the inevitable sea sickness. However, in the words of Captain Matthew Webb (the first recorded person to swim the English Channel) “Nothing great is easy!”
In July 2020 this team of students from QEGS will be swimming from England to France...and in the process completing one of the world’s toughest open water swimming challenges.
