Haircuts For Homeless By Kayel

A friend said to me once in my past, "Remember all the things I have done for you? I did this and did that, and you didn't even do this one thing for me."

This made me feel bad because I was busy with personal problems or I forgot or just couldn't. In guilt I pondered on how inconsiderate I was and ended up in complete shock. In actuality I had done hundreds of things for my friend that was out of love that took much more effort. I didn't remember even one, till I felt guilt and contemplated.

In this moment I learned a lesson. I gave out of love. My friend gave not from the heart therefore it was tallied against me. This charity volunteer group I had started and operated for the homeless on my own, and from the start I did it all alone, in the rain, when the snow falls, burning sun, when it was troubling to do so, and I had no help, for almost 2 years now, every Saturday unless I was sick or out of town. Everything I supplied for others, the products, the equipment, my own supplies, the gas and I had struggled with work to keep this going and no one seemed to care, and what was sad how others ridiculed me.

But the big thing is, if I did something else to help others, I would easily forget I did any of this and the only thing I would remember is the smiles and the love I felt from the people I helped.

My respect for women came from watching my mother's struggles in life. Feeling her pain, drying her eyes, hearing her cries, listening to her stories to teach me. The sacrifices, the nurturing, the prayers, the will to survive because of me and my siblings. A mother's love, immeasurable and powerful in one's life. What if we didn't have one?

A little goes a long way when its about kindness. Like I had said before, doing is different from saying with good intentions. And true giving is when you forget you ever did it. I speak from experience because I found it hard when I was asked what I have done, the story of my life.

Remembering wonderful doers joining me on Thanksgiving Saturday. To my sisters and brothers for acting on their love.

When you made a difference in an unfortunate brother's life, however small it is, the feeling is priceless.

The countenance changes, the mood livens, the smiles burst, and the hugs are inevitable. Something happens and its more than a haircut. But look at them holding the mirror - this is my joy.

There was this quiet non smiling woman that barely spoke and was soft spoken when she did, to a different demeanor. I loved doing that for her.

Its my opinion that our sisters on the streets are more vulnerable, and need little more. I have a heart for their struggles as being homeless. Besides, its more expensive for a woman to get a haircut at a salon - a little more goes a long way.

There was this man who was cold and really grateful for his haircut by a kind brother from TOC hair salon and academy. And no matter the cold, the homeless line up.

And there was this woman in the background that stepped in to help the team and did everything but cut hair?! I don't even know her name, but if she shows up next Saturday, I am going to hug her so tight and thank her from the bottom of my heart. I don't know her at all and there she was with her frozen fingers helping in any way she can. That's kindness right there. Cleaning, disinfecting, caping and organizing or whatever she can do to help us run efficiently as possible. Amazing!

We have two sisters loving on our brothers and sisters from the streets. When I asked them how their experience was out here with me this is the response: " Joy. It made my day. I want to do it every day! " The other said, "Thank you! I learned things today I don't think others learned about the homeless, things I never knew..." both were grateful to be out here. Their hearts are so big, and that's what we need, more love.

Hi my name is Kayel Truong and I run a team of professional hairstylist here in Calgary just outside of the Drop in Rehab Center. And every Saturday my team and I share our love to the less fortunate by freely giving back to the community with haircuts. It is our passion and honor to be able to share this experience with our brother and sisters who desperately need our love and attention.

Unfortunately as the colder months come closer and closer, I won't be able to transport my tools and equipment because my brother will be needing his car back. So I'm in a little of a dilemma and this is the reason why I'm trying to fund raise for a used van with many other things needed to cut hair.

The homeless in our city will need your kindness, compassion and love. The funds will help supply. Whatever it is that you feel in your heart to help as soon as possible everyone will greatly appreciate it. You have no idea with your support what we can do to improve our people in our city. I am grateful for all who lent a hand.

Thank you with warmest regards,
Kayel Truong
