This request is to help our daughter, Bex, who is now 22.
Bex has lived her whole life in Kingsbridge, Devon, attending primary school at Kingsbridge Community Primary school, where she was first diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. Bex went on to attend secondary school at Kingsbridge Community College for years 7&8 and then moved to South Devon Community College, where she was attached to the CAIRB there, to complete her secondary education. Bex then went on to South Devon College where she attended courses until the age of 21 years; she successfully took part in both Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards while at SDC.
She is such a very brave person, she lives with a very complex series of problems, all of which fall under the umbrella of her diagnosis of Autism; these problems now include extreme tics from age 17, which can mean she needs to be fed by another person as well as causing her to frequently bruise herself and anyone misfortunate enough to cop a blow.
She longs to be able to lead a better life out in the community but her complex issues stop her from being able to do so, a miscommunication between her brain (beginning at age 18) bladder and bowels leaves her prone to soiling or wetting herself (sometimes both at the same time) making it hard for her to be confident when outside the home.
As a family we have multiple members who live with autism and our budget is restricted, however we have realised that Bex would totally benefit from having a service dog, everyone who knows our daughter says that this is a fantastic or wonderful thing to do for her.
The only trouble is, this is not a cheap undertaking by any stretch of the imagination, so we have decided to take this step of asking for help.
So anyone out there who would like to help out with this very deserving cause, please do ... as the well known saying goes “Every Little Helps”.
