Migratory raptors are being hunted in Colombia! ¡Las aves rapaces migratorias están siendo cazadas en Colombia! Each year more than five million  raptors migrate from North America to South America along the Mesoamerican Land Corridor, the most important raptor migration flyway in the new world. Colombia is the sole point of entry into South America for these birds , offering food, shelter and roosting sites for large groups of migratory raptors before they disperse throughout the winter range. One critical migration corridor and roosting site for Swainson’s hawks (Buteo swainsoni) and Broad-winged hawks (Buteo platypterus) is located in Tolima , central Colombia where large flocks rest before continuing their migration along the Andes. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/53617720_1609340390292148_r.jpeg" alt="53617720_1609340390292148_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> Thousands of hawks are shot annually  in this area, some people do it for fun or food while some farmers believe  the fat of the birds’ corpses has healing properties. Despite the efforts of various institutions, the shooting of raptors continues to take place every spring. In 2019 it was reported that the hunting has now spread into new regions  in Colombia. In spite of the threat to the raptor population and the significant concentration of these birds found in Tolima, there are no scientific assessments of migrating raptor numbers in this region, the numbers using the roosts and the numbers being shot. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/53617720_1609340428977693_r.jpeg" alt="53617720_1609340428977693_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> OUR GOAL: We intend to start a Conservation plan for migratory raptors in Colombia. Our project (Conservación de Rapaces Migratorias-Colombia) aims to: 1. Establish a long-term migration monitoring station in Colombia, the first count in Tolima region. The count will allow the collection of valuable information such as trends in populations and will inform understanding of ecology and conservation of raptors in the neotropics. The proposed methodology is already in use in other places such as Veracruz River of Raptors   and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary  , and is standardized by HMANA .  2. Hold a workshop for students, conservationists and the local community to train people in raptor identification and counting protocols. Once the training is done this group of people will help conduct the first count.  3. Strengthen local raptor conservation and education efforts  with additional public programming and materials to develop an appreciation and awareness of raptors and their role in the environment (using materials from Veracruz and Hawk Mountain as a model). 4. Identify opportunities and enhance the ecotourism potential of the Tolima region. Around this region bird tourism is flourishing which has the potential to provide conservation opportunity and incentive for raptors and other species. We will use strategies implemented in HMS and VRR, projects that use tourism as a tool for conservation and local economic progress. We also expect an increase in community participation and pride, which will increase the appreciation of the unique corridor for migration of raptors in central Colombia. WHAT WE NEED TO DO: Funding is needed by mid-February to make our project reality: We need  to conduct preliminary fieldwork to establish the best location for the long-term count. Once we have a location, we need to set-up a monitoring station with the equipment and skilled counters manning it daily for the 2020 season (March 1-April 30). Two expert Veracruz River of Raptors counters and the project leader Esther Vallejo, a former Hawk Mountain trainee and Veracruz River of Raptors, will lead the count in the first year, train local conservation volunteers, assess roost site numbers, and help with public education.  Funding is needed to cover travel and basic expenses for these biologists during the 2.5 month project (Feb 15 to April 30).   The participation of the local community is essential in our effort, and for this reason we will sponsor a raptor identification and monitoring training workshop  for members of the local community, including students and local conservation leaders.  Volunteers assisting with the count will be provided binoculars, food and transportation for the day. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/53617720_1609340467170464_r.jpeg" alt="53617720_1609340467170464_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> HOW CAN YOU HELP CONSERVE RAPTORS?  Please follow us on our social media (Facebook, Instagram). Un corredor  de migración crítico y un sitio de descanso para las aguilillas cuaresmeras (Buteo swainsoni) y los gavilanes de alas anchas (Buteo platypterus) se encuentra en Tolima , en el centro de Colombia, donde descansan grandes bandadas antes de continuar su migración a lo largo de los Andes. Miles de rapaces son cazadas anualmente  en esta área, algunas personas lo hacen por diversión o comida, mientras que algunos campesinos creen que la grasa de las aves tiene propiedades curativas. A pesar de los esfuerzos de varias instituciones, la caza de aves rapaces continúa ocurriendo cada primavera. En 2019 se informó que la caza ahora se ha extendido a nuevas regiones. A pesar de la amenaza para la población de rapaces y la concentración significativa de estas aves encontradas en Tolima, no hay evaluaciones científicas de los números de rapaces migratorios en esta región, los números que usan las zonas de descanso, ni los números de aves cazadas. NUESTRO OBJETIVO: Comenzaremos un plan de conservación para aves rapaces migratorias en Colombia. Nuestro proyecto en Colombia (Conservación de Rapaces Migratorias-Colombia) tiene como objetivo: 1. Establecer una estación de monitoreo de migración a largo plazo en Colombia, el primer conteo en la región del Tolima. El recuento permitirá la recopilación de información valiosa, como las tendencias en las poblaciones y aportará a la comprensión de la ecología y la conservación de las aves rapaces en los neotrópicos. La metodología propuesta ya está en uso en otros lugares, como en  Veracruz Río de  Rapaces y el Hawk Mountain Sanctuary ,  y está estandarizada por HMANA . 2. Organizar un taller para estudiantes, conservacionistas y la comunidad local para capacitarlos en los protocolos de identificación y conteo de aves rapaces. Una vez finalizada la capacitación, este grupo de personas apoyará a realizar el primer conteo. 3. Fortalecer los esfuerzos locales  de conservación y educación de aves rapaces con programación pública adicional y materiales para desarrollar una apreciación y conciencia de las aves rapaces y su papel en el medio ambiente (utilizando materiales de Veracruz y Hawk Mountain como modelo). 4. Identificar oportunidades y mejorar el potencial de ecoturismo de la región del Tolima. Alrededor de esta región, el turismo de aves está floreciendo, lo que tiene el potencial de proporcionar oportunidades de conservación e incentivos para las aves rapaces y otras especies. Utilizaremos estrategias implementadas en HMS y VRR, proyectos que utilizan el turismo como herramienta para la conservación y el progreso económico local.  QUÉ NECESITAMOS HACER: Se necesita financiación para hacer realidad nuestro proyecto: Necesitamos realizar un trabajo de campo preliminar para establecer la mejor ubicación para el conteo a largo plazo.
