In honor of Dr. Patricia Bath, a pioneer in laser cataract surgery and a noted humanitarian, her family and friends are committed to helping establish scholarships in her name to benefit deserving medical students, residents and fellows who are under-represented in medicine with interest in ophthalmology and research.
This scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to medical students, residents and fellows who are underrepresented in medicine at various universities.
After overcoming numerous gender and race-based challenges as she pursued her career goals, Dr. Bath was committed to increase the pipeline by creating educational opportunities in the field of medicine, especially for women.
Your donation will help continue Dr. Bath's efforts to help support medical and research careers for aspiring physician-scientists who are underrepresented to create a more diverse, inclusive and representative generation of physicians.
As a native of Harlem, NYC, Dr. Bath won a National Science Foundation scholarship as a teenager, went on to graduate from Howard University’s medical school, and became the first African American person to serve as a resident in ophthalmology at New York University.
Among her many achievements, Dr. Bath became the first African American surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center and the first woman ophthalmologist on the faculty of UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute. In 1983, Dr. Bath was appointed Chair of the King-Drew-UCLA Ophthalmology Residency Program, becoming the first woman in the United States to head such a program.
In 1988 she patented the Laserphaco Probe, short for “laser photoablative cataract surgery”, providing less painful cataract treatment and restored sight for patients who had been blind for decades. She ultimately held multiple patents all focused on the field of ophthalmology.
Dr. Bath received academic credentials from some of the world’s finest institutions including Hunter College, Howard University College of Medicine, Albert Einstein Yeshiva University, NYU, Columbia University, UCLA, Harvard University, and the University of Free Berlin.
Dr. Bath has also been honored by the New York Academy of Medicine, the Smithsonian Museum, the National Library of Medicine, and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.
