HOW WILL WE HELP?

THE PROBLEM
The people of Flint, Michigan are being failed by their government and offered short-term, unsustainable "solutions" to the deadly levels of lead in their water. Bottled water isn't a good enough solution despite being well-intentioned. Some water filters have been provided- but they have a history of falling apart, only install on certain kinds of faucets, clog quickly and need costly replacement filters that only work for a few weeks. NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

INJURED: as many as 12,00 children and 100,000 people are still exposed to high levels of lead- a heavy metal neurotoxin that can cause intellectual disabilities, reproductive problems, anemia, seisures and headaches.

INSULTED: They are still required to pay for this filthly, poisonous non-potable water. Filters previously provided fall apart, won't fit faucets, last only weeks and make the people of Flint once again PAY for replacements.

From the New York Times- Friday, November 11, 2016: A federal judge in Michigan on Thursday ordered that bottled water be delivered to residents of Flint, Mich., more than two years after the city’s switch to an untreated source resulted in contaminated and undrinkable water.

Under the ruling by Judge David M. Lawson of Federal District Court, state and city officials must immediately begin providing each Flint resident with at least 96 half-liter bottles of water per week as the city works toward a permanent solution.

“How the water crisis is resolved ultimately will be left to the City of Flint and the State of Michigan,” Judge Lawson said in his preliminary injunction. “Nonetheless, there is an immediate danger to Flint residents.”

PLEASE share this far and wide. The American people CAN take action to do something GOOD and RIGHT for our fellow citizens.

How will we spend the money?
The money will only be used to fund the purchase of Berkey Filters, the shipping of the filters and the distribution of the filters. There will be no salaries, per diems, percentages, cuts or payments that do not directly and cost-effectively support this work. If, in the very unlikely event that the money is not fully utilized, remaining funds will be used to directly support clean water in the Flint area only.

Who are we?
I am Kelly Whitaker and I live in Golden Valley, MN. I am simply a concerned citizen and am sick and tired of watching my fellow Americans suffer this travesty. I bought a Berkey for my own family's drinking water and I believe the people of Flint deserve the same quality of water as the four of us do.

I am not powerless, and neither are you.
