Puntarenas is a uniquely situated, historic city on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. For many years it was the main commercial port for Costa Rica, a city that attracted hundreds of tourists from the country’s urbanized communities, and was home to a thriving fishing industry. The commercial port was relocated leaving Puntarenas as a cruise ship port; the fishing industry was industrialized and small scale fishing was restricted by environmental regulations, and other sources of employment and economic activity left Puntarenas. As a result Puntarenas now is struggling with high unemployment rates, increasing poverty, a growing number of homeless people, and economic decline.
To revitalize Puntarenas a number of residents and “friends” created an association “El Puerto Puede” (The Port (aka Puntarenas) Can) to confront the reality of Puntarenas with positive change. Our values are collaboration, inclusiveness, and action. Since its founding, the members of El Puerto Puede have supported a food bank for unemployed fishermen, organized recreational activities for families, offered educational courses in local government, implemented a project for local college art students to use their skills to beautify the town’s beach side boulevard, and are building alliances with local and national government and non governmental agencies to make lasting change. Projects in the planning stages are converting a section of the town's beach to make it universally accessible the renovation and restoration of public spaces including national landmarks and city parks.
We are request funding to cover costs of these efforts not covered by other sources. Members of El Puerto Puede pay monthly dues of $4.00 and have covered costs of projects through local donations and personal funds. With your help we can grow our efforts to make positive changes in the lives of people who love their community and want to contribute through meaningful work. No donation is too small! We look forward to welcoming you to Puntarenas!!
