Pumping Legs for Water 2019

Donation protected
On July 26-27, I will cycle 100 km through Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. I'm raising money to ensure that the animals who live there have enough water to survive. Please donate today.

I was so impressed by the people I met at last year's Pumping Legs for Water and the work they are doing to protect the animals of Zimbabwe, that I've decided to return. I've also increased my fundraising goal. Due to the current economic situation in Zimbabwe, the event committee had to make the difficult decision to reduce the registration fee from $200 to $100 in order to make sure we have enough riders for the event to take place. I'm hoping to help offset some of that lost revenue by fundraising.

Last year, 34 people (and a Chihuahua named Izzy) helped me raise $2500 for the animals of Hwange National Park. Can we raise $3000 this year? I think we can!

Why do the animals of Hwange need our help?

Hwange National Park encompasses more than 14,000 square kilometers. It is the largest natural reserve in Zimbabwe and home to one of the largest elephant populations in the world. Unfortunately, the park lacks adequate natural water sources during the dry season (June - November) and water has to be pumped from underground to help the animals survive.

The money you donate will:

Provide a reliable water supply: Wildlife & Environment Zimbabwe (WEZ) uses the funds raised by Pumping Legs to ensure that Hwange National Park has the tanks, solar panels, tools, fuel, spare parts and borehole pumps it needs to sustain its wildlife. In the years when the National Parks Department didn't have enough money to maintain its pumps, countless animals suffered and died. Pumping Legs is now in it's 12th year and the animals are surviving because of donations like yours.

Protect the animals from poachers: The animals are at risk of illegal poaching even inside the park, which is not fenced in. If they wander beyond the park's boundaries in search of water, their risk of being killed for food or body parts (e.g. elephant tusks and rhino horns sold on the black market) increases exponentially. Ensuring there is adequate water inside the park increases the likelihood that the animals will stay inside the park.

Support the local economy: Many Zimbabweans rely on tourism to survive. Without animals, there is no tourism. A healthy animal population at Hwange means a healthy economy and reliable employment in a country that has weathered more than its share of difficult times.

I have no words to describe the warmth and hospitality I received in Zimbabwe last year. People welcomed me into their homes, fed me, and treated me like family. Seeing firsthand how the money raised by this event is benefitting the animals, and meeting the people entrusted with stewarding the funds, I am more passionate than ever about this cause.

Please give generously to help the animals of Hwange and then share this page with your family and friends. Thank you in advance for your support.

Love,
Suzanne
