They all live within 20 or so miles of the path of the eye, and many owned homes in low lying areas near the sea that received massive flooding and hurricane force winds.
As of now, communication is poor, since electricity is down across the island, so information is still coming in. The good news is we managed to confirm that everyone is safe and accounted for.
The family includes: a cousin with a one year old son and a baby due any day whose home was flooded; an uncle with diabetes and double leg amputations, which may be vulnerable to infection; a grandmother who is not in the best health; and an aunt whose home was destroyed . There are likely other homes badly affected, but we don't know the total extent of damage, as some areas are still evacuated.
Shelter, food, supplies, water and medicine are all limited. The economy of the island was already in a prolonged recession, and it may be some time before anyone can get back to work.
100% of what we raise will go to these families. We will be starting the week of 10/1/17 by placing orders for pickup of emergency supplies at the WalMart Supercenter in Ponce. The remainder of the funds withdrawn from this site will be distributed as cash to help with home repairs.
We are setting the goal at $2000, although much more will be needed. We appreciate any help you can offer. A share is as good as a contribution.
