Puerto Rico's Moms & Babies

Dear birth and breastfeeding community: 

As a Puerto Rican birth/breastfeeding community leader in San Antonio, TX (who arrived here as a child with her family as a direct result of Hurricane David in 1980) soooo many loving people have asked me how they can help Puerto Rico's mothers and babies in light of the destruction of Hurricane María.  Many of these sweet people are already donors to larger efforts,  yet are intentional about giving specifically to efforts that will strengthen support mothers and babies in Puerto Rico. 

In reply to these generous inquires from my community, over the last few days I have been gathering information about "on-the-ground" organizations in Puerto Rico who will have a direct impact on maternal-child health (organizations who are limited or paralyzed given the island's current situation) during Hurricane Maria recovery efforts.  

Over the next few weeks, you (my sweet community of mothers and babies everywhere) and my business will be helping the smallest victims of Hurricane María via your donations on this Go-Fund-Me account as BHLC disburses funds to the organizations who need it the most.

How will the recipient-organizations be vetted...

As Laura mentioned, the proceeds from this account will go to multiple "on the ground" non-profit organizations focused on strengthening care and nutrition for Puerto Rico's new mothers and babies, post Hurricane María. These agencies are being vetted with ethics as the primary criteria. Zero donations will go to agencies, companies or organizations who have a history of exploiting our families.

This page has been organized by Breastfeeding Housecalls & Lactation Clinic, LLC (who will be donating 10% of its profits in October to babies in Puerto Rico) in San Antonio, Texas. Its owner, Laura María Gruber, IBCLC is from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico and arrived in San Antonio as a child after Hurricane David flooded their home. Words can't explain the intense compassion and connection that Laura feels to this disaster...she's asking the birth & baby-feeding  community-and anyone who loves babies (which is everyone) to step up, step in, and please give.

Querida comunidad de maternidad y lactancia:

Como líder puertorriqueña en mi comunidad de parto/lactancia en San Antonio, TX (quién llegó a SA precisamente como resultado de el huracán David en 1980) muchas personas me han preguntado cómo ellos pueden ayudar específicamente a los esfuerzos de apoyo a madres nuevas y sus bebés en Puerto Rico. Muchas de estas personas han contribuido a esfuerzos más grandes pero tienen la intención aún de donar a recursos que apoyan a preservar la maternidad y a la infancia saludable en Puerto Rico dado a la tragedia que está viviendo la isla.

A través de los últimos días, en respuesta al pedido generoso de mi comunidad, he estado adquiriendo información sobre agencias en Puerto Rico que tienen impacto directo en la salud materna e infantil ya que la capacidad de muchas de éstas ha sido limitada o paralizada por la situación actual en la isla dado a la destrucción causada por el huracán María.

A través de las próximas semanas, tu (mi estimado miembro de la comunidad de salud materna e infantil en todas partes) y mi práctica ayudarán a las oorganizaciones que más podrán apoyar a las victimas más pequeñas de este desastre a través de este fondo. A continuación puede leer más sobre cómo las organizaciones y cómo se escogerán.

¿A quienes ayudará tu donación? 

Lo que se recaude de esta cuenta de Go-Fund-Me se le donará a varias organizaciones enfocadas en fortalecer la nutrición y apego familiar para los bebés de Puerto Rico durante la recuperación del Huracán María. Las agencias puestas a recibir fondos serán evaluadas por su ética y por su habilidad de servir a áreas de más necesidad. Cero fondos se le dará a organizaciones quienes hayan explotado a nuestras familias previamente.

Su dueña, Laura María Gruber, IBCLC, es de Vega Baja, Puerto Rico y llegó a San Antonio, Texas de niña a causa de daños del huracán David. No existen palabras para expresar la compasión y conexión que Laura siente por este desastre...por eso, Laura le pide a la comunidad de parto y alimentación de bebés (o a todos quienes aman bebes-que es casi todo el mundo) que digan presente, y den de si mismo.
