Dear Friends:
I was in Puerto Grether just last weekend as the torrential rain began to fall...
I had gone to Puerto Grether with my friend, Gabriel, to discover more of the history of Puerto Grether and research it's namesake, Hans Grether, me sharing my surname with him.
It was one of the most moving events of my life meeting these extrememly humble indigenous people.
They prepared a dinner/gala for us as the rains began to fall. It was the hardest rain I have ever experienced, and it never let up.
Puerto Grether sits near the river Ichilo and over the course of 48 hours, the river rose an unbelievable 45 feet and wiped out the village.
The people are now without food, clean water, clothes, mattresses, medicine...everything we take for granted in our daily lives.
We got back home the evening of Tuesday, May 23rd, and I got the message just yesterday on Wednesday that the people are in a state of suffering, having moved to higher ground and living under tarps without the necessities to survive.
We have a reliable contact in Dr. Melina Choque Rios who will over see the proper administration of your generous kindness and contribution.
Please help with this dire emergency as soon as possible. And please let others know...
