Village Latrine Project- Uganda

The Foundation For Relief and Development of Africa has been working in Ugandan villages to support community development. For the summer of 2018 I have been working with them to train village leaders on public health practices to improve the health of their community.

The village of Lutale B is in need of a pit latrine. For 18 years, a community of 1000 people (600 of which are under 18 years) has lived without a clean and safe place to “make a short call” as the Ugandans say. 

My team visited and stayed nearby for 3 days to train community leaders on public health topics. Among issues like HIV and nutrition, we taught sanitation solutions in this village. In order to continue public health changes, they need a pit latrine installed. Waterborne illnesses  like cholera, bilharzia, and stomach problems are common in this community as well as those spread through feces. A proper latrine will decrease their time spend in the water.
We also discussed how the community can form a committee to care for the latrine once it is built. They are also ready to provide labor and a few materials to help build their latrine.
