Help Make Public Health Stronger

Tax deductible
By now, everyone knows that public health is incredibly important, and our public health system has been overwhelmed by COVID-19! It really has been a long, rough pandemic. But even as we get a better handle on the pandemic, stress, overwhelm, and burnout continue to threaten public health professionals. I have a solution and I need your help to fund it- to rebuild the public health system starting with its number one resource: its people. Thousands of public health professionals need your help to get the support they need.

My name is Dr. Kristi McClamroch. I’m an epidemiologist and the founder and executive director of Public Health Connected. Our non-profit organization is all about strengthening the community of public health professionals so that they are empowered to face these challenges of working in public health.

Public Health Connected grew from the Public Health Rock Stars Facebook group, which I started when we first went into COVID-19 shelter-in-place. I felt disconnected from my public health buddies and frustrated by the misinformation about COVID-19 and the pandemic response. The group started with 50 members and exploded to thousands within weeks. It quickly became a safe space for public health professionals to talk about the challenges of working in public health and to get support to prevent burnout. One member said, “[This group has] done more to maintain my sanity these past few years than you realize, just by providing the opportunity to connect with like-minded people.” I formed Public Health Connected to provide more types of support to people working in public health.

Although COVID-19 has exacerbated the challenges we face, many of these challenges reach far beyond the pandemic. We choose to do this work because we care deeply about people’s health and well-being and we are committed to help not just individuals, but entire populations. The work we do is often against the backdrop of a basic lack of understanding about public health, hostility, racism, discrimination, underfunding, and a dysfunctional public health infrastructure. We may struggle to reconcile our identities as public health professionals with other parts of our lives. And there are few places where we can safely articulate our thoughts and feelings with people who share similar values and face similar challenges.

Public Health Connected offers opportunities for public health professionals to connect with each other, to process their thoughts and feelings, and to learn skills that promote resilience. Through our flagship program, Public Health Recharge, we offer monthly virtual support groups for people working in public health, and teach new skills around self-care, mindfulness, and stress management. This support helps participants prevent burnout and mental health crises and decreases the chance that they will leave the field of public health. Soon, we will expand our offerings to include virtual workshops and public health community building events. But, in order to offer support to more people working in public health and cover our operational costs for the rest of 2022, Public Health Connected needs to raise $20,000 this month.

Can you support PHC with a donation of $25, $50, or $100? Your donation will help public health professionals live their best lives while making the biggest possible impact on the health of our communities.
