PS 191, a Title I K-8 school with a population of approximately 470 students on Manhattan's UWS is raising money for a library/learning center.
Our school has functioned for quite some time without a library/learning center, however, the staff, faculty, and families of PS 191 want to be more than "just functioning" for our students. This would not simply be a room that houses books. It would be a dedicated space in which children would read, study, enhance their writing skills, and receive much needed extra help through mentoring and tutoring programs. Unfortunately, as with so many schools across NYC, PS 191 does not receive sufficient funding from the DOE to offer such resources, and our PTA alone cannot raise adequate funds to realize the effort.
Gratefully, we have identified space within the school and we are working tirelessly to collect books through community donations, as well as to secure funding for a paid librarian.
What we need now, from PS191 families, friends, fellow educators, and community members, is help to obtain book cases and shelves, floor coverings, paint, tables, desks, chairs, as well as funds to deconstruct a wall between two adjoining rooms. Plus many other educational and practical items that make "just a room with books" into a library and learning center!
