Even though we reached our goal, we will be raising funds until the end of the 2017/2018 school year so that we can cover our fundraising costs, and put more funds toward our materials depot. The P.S. 147 Fundraising Committee is raising funds to provide professional development for our teachers in Project Based Learning.
What is Project Based Learning?
Project based learning is the act of learning through identifying a real-world problem and developing its solution. Students show what they learn as they journey through the unit, not just at the end. Through this type of active and engaged learning, students obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they’re studying. Projects are academically rigorous and aligned with academic standards.
Why Project Based Learning?
Learning through hands on experiences and real world problem solving not only leads to mastery of specific skills, but also teaches students to be lifelong learners. This approach fosters thinkers who don’t just memorize, but engage in deeper learning with self-motivated curiosity and passion. This way of teaching and learning is more inclusive, allowing teachers to more easily differentiate for different learning styles and abilities. PBL also allows teachers to design meaningful, relevant learning experiences that are culturally relevant.
The Principal’s Vision for Project Based Learning at P.S. 147
Ms. Sandra Noyola is a 2017 Teachers College Cahn Fellow. Her project under this fellowship is to support a shift in her teachers pedagogy to more student-centered, project-based learning across all grades. She has been actively supporting and encouraging this shift for several years, and in fact PBL is already happening in many grades.
Plan for PBL Implementation
Ms. Noyola wants to take this informal shift and expand and formalize it by offering a select cohort of 35 teachers professional development and to launch Project Based Learning pilot programs next school year (2018/2019). PBL will be implemented across subject areas, with specific focus in Science and Social Studies. The Pilot Team and trained cohort will receive ongoing support and will eventually offer peer training and mentorship to teachers in all other grades. Funds raised will support 3 full days of professional development for up to 35 teachers, as well as follow up consultation and support.
PBL Materials Depot
Approximately $1500.00 of funds raised will go to starting a materials depot for teachers and students, so that they have continued access to the physical resources they need to create meaningful projects in the classroom. After the library is built using funds raised, the ongoing inventory of materials will be donated, cataloged and managed by P.S. 147 families, the P.T.A. and participating staff.
