Providing food for families in India during COVID

Most of us, over the last month, have experienced life in a whole new way. For the first time in most Americans’ lives, grocery store shelves are empty. The economy has crashed, and many don’t know where money for food, the house payment, or rent will come from this month. Going to work, shopping, eating out, gathering together, and even going to church have been severely limited or even banned. It’s like we’re all characters in a dystopian novel or citizens in another country, one we hear about on the news. For most Americans, it’s the worst thing we can imagine. In India’s tribal villages, however, what we call depravation is often considered a good day.
For those who are born into the Indian caste system as Untouchables, and even more so for those who are professing Christians, life is something we cannot imagine in America. Most are able to feed their families for about $30 per month, if the parents can find work. And, even when work is available, $30 per month is a tall order for many. Now, with the country shut down because of COVID-19, even the meagerest subsistence is threatened for many families.
Shopping for food is allowed, for those who have the money, until 10:00am daily. Those who don’t make it home by then are, more often than not, beaten by the police for being out. The same thing happens for anyone in the villages who are trying to work or care for friends or family members not in the home.
Times are tough here in the U.S.A. In India, they’re nearly impossible. Indian families who are professing Christians are praying for a miracle not only for themselves, but for their brothers and sisters who are suffering as well. They pray, fully believing their prayers will be heard and answered.
You can help answer those prayers with a contribution to help feed the poorest of the poor while COVID-19 has the country locked down. Just $15 will buy a family enough rice to last for an entire month. However, any amount is both appreciated and desperately needed, as are your prayers.
