Per Elliot Davis Fox 2 news:
I interviewed a homeless mother named Alicia and her two children 5 and 3, who are living out on the streets of St. Louis in this freezing weather. She says she can’t afford rent to be able to stay someplace. She also says she hasn’t seen much in the way of help from the City of St Louis even though a lot of private organizations like New Life Evangelistic Center have been by to help. They give away coats, tents, blankets and food. She says that help is critical to helping her and her two children survive life out on the streets.
Now life on the streets is even harder in this freezing weather. She said she’s trying to get into a homeless shelter but they're all full. The city says it will put up 160 additional shelters beds in December. The city said in a statement there were some 800 beds thru out the area but advocates for the homeless say they're full up for the most part, especially places where women and children can go. Alicia says she hasn’t seen city health department workers or Social Services workers coming around to look after her and her children, who, as I said, have to sleep outside in the cold weather on nights like tonight. The homeless used to get a break, and the city paid for a warm-up Bi State bus that was put on bus was put out on Chestnut Street downtown around five pm or so in the evening, and stayed there till around midnight to give the Homeless a chance to get in from the Cold. They could board those buses and sit there and stay warm for hours the bus was provided during Mayor Lyda krewson’s administration but the homeless don’t know if Mayor Tishaura Jones will do the same and provide the warm up bi State buses during the cold weather. I asked the Mayor’s office if they will provide that warm up bus that were so vital to the homeless, but I haven’t gotten back an answer to that question yet. Meanwhile folks like Alicia and her children are just trying to survive another cold night out on the mean streets of St. Louis where they say they don’t see much in the way of help .
Please help raise funds to secure housing for Alicia and her babies. They are currently homeless and sleeping on the streets in this cold weather...
