ProtestAccess  is a volunteer collective currently providing captioning, transcription, and visual description to Black Lives Matter and anti-racism related content posted across social media platforms. Protest Access responds to requests from online communities of d/Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, Visually Impaired, Disabled people, as well as international and American audiences who are English language learners and benefit from captions and audio. Justice and accessibility are inextricably linked, and we are committed to helping make the largest social and cultural progressive movement of our lifetime accessible for all to engage in.

Beginning as a small group of volunteers, Protest Access has quickly grown to a collective of over 200 international volunteers who caption, transcribe, and visually describe content, as well as ~20 volunteer organizers who focus on the functioning of the operation. Collectively, Protest Access receives anywhere from 20 to 200 requests a week, and on average, publishes 8 videos a day. As of September 2020, we have provided access for nearly 700 pieces of content, including over 40 hours of video.

As we have grown, so has our need for tools to handle our increasingly large workload. To continue to provide these essential services, Protest Access has set a goal of raising $5,000.

Protest Access continues to operate with a substantial backlog due to a lack of resources; therefore these funds will go toward expenditures that will allow us to spend less time on the operational aspects of our volunteer-run organization, and more time processing as many of your requests as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Our operational costs would include:

- Maintaining an official website for Protest Access to serve as an official collection point for all of our social media platforms, to recruit volunteers, and to provide resources for content creators on how to increase accessibility.
- Increased internal video storage (such as Dropbox, or another storage platform), which is critical to hold the up-to-700 videos we may be working through at any given time.
- Paid project management and logistics tools such as Trello, Slack, and Mailchimp to ensure our organization is functional and sustainable.

We hope that with such tools, we will have an even faster turnaround time for requests and maintain high-quality work.

Please note that as we are still in the process of obtaining nonprofit status, contributions are not tax deductible at this time.

While we plan to use any and all funds raised to sustain our work, any funds unspent by September 30, 2021 will be donated to the following organizations: HEARD, National Black Disability Coalition, and National Black Deaf Advocates.

In addition to accessibility and logistic volunteers, Protest Access is guided by an Advisory Board comprised of members from the primary communities that we serve; members are part of the Blind, Visually Impaired, d/Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Black communities. We greatly value input from our advisory board to inform our practices. If you are part of one or multiple of these communities/identities and are interested in joining the advisory board, please reach out via the Contact button below for more information.
