Mount Grace is working with Chuck and Livvy Tarleton to permanently protect Sunset View Farm in Winchendon. The Tarletons have run the farm for over 40 years and are now working with Mount Grace to keep their 70-acre property a whole farm forever.
Sunset View Farm is on Route 140 just past the "right to farm community" sign on the Winchendon town line. For more than 230 years, Sunset View Farm has been an iconic part of the landscape, providing local food to the community. The farmstand is filled with fresh-picked, seasonal local produce including tomatoes, strawberries, broccoli, and even maple syrup made in the farm's sugar shack!
But New England's farms are under threat: according to a farmland inventory conducted by Mount Grace in 2017, 71% of Winchendon’s farmland is not protected. Additionally, a recent study by the American Farmland Trust and Land for Good suggests that a third of Massachusetts farms will change hands in the next ten years.
Mount Grace is fundraising to protect the entire property and ensure it will always be operated as a farm. An Option to Purchase at Agricultural Value (OPAV) will provide the next generation of farmers with the ability to purchase not just the land, but the house and other infrastructure, at an affordable price- keeping Sunset View Farm a whole farm forever.
Sunset View Farm, with its open vista, lush fields, and historical farmhouse carries on the legacy of our region's farming roots and inspires us to protect the special places in our communities that might otherwise be lost.
Mount Grace has $70,000 to raise from the community support and has a goal of raising $20,000 from this GoFundMe page. This money will be part of the $250,000 campaign to save Sunset View Farm! Please support our campaign and help us preserve this iconic farm by making a gift today!
