Protect Groundwater with AquAlliance and MaMuse

Tax deductible
MaMuse stands with AquAlliance

AquAlliance exists to defend northern California waters and to challenge threats to the hydrologic health of the Northern Sacramento River watershed. In supporting this campaign, you help fund three lawsuits AquAlliance has recently filed that directly confront the escalating attempts to divert more and more water from the Northern Sacramento River hydrologic region. If not taken to court, Local, State, and Federal water agencies will have free rein until 2042 to DEVASTATE GROUNDWATER IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. This overuse of groundwater for water transfer sales to desert agriculture south of the Delta will cause dry wells, ground collapse, diminished stream flow, and the death of urban and wild forests in the Sacramento Valley.

AquAlliance fights for the most vulnerable in this struggle – small farmers, domestic well owners, fish, birds, trees, creeks, and streams. All Proceeds from this campaign go directly to AquAlliance. Ninety-five percent of proceeds go to litigation or preparing for it through mandatory comment submissions or testimony.

MaMuse's Water Story....
Fourteen years ago, on a sunny day, with a slight breeze in the air and inspiration blooming in our hearts, we (Sarah and Karisha) sat on a back porch in Chico, California and committed to MaMuse. We didn't know about the future, but we knew that we loved playing music together, that MaMuse would be our boat on which to navigate the River of Creativity, and that all of this would be in dedication to WATER.
Living in the hot Sacramento Valley for many years, our summers were spent creekside, where songs were known to drift downstream. So many songs about water have poured through us. There's Glorious, Lean In, On the One and Hallelujah, God's Eyes, Prayers for Freedom, Pearls, and For Her Speak, Dunk Down, River Run Free, and Oh, River... there are probably more... Looking back now, we can clearly see that water is a deep Source of what informs our music.
Years have trickled by since those early Chico days. As the currents change and shape us, we awaken to California's ugly history of water abuse. In 2015, Sarah embarked on a 500+ mile, three-year Pilgrimage called "Walking Water" through Payahunadu (what is now called the Owens Valley). On foot and in community, she witnessed firsthand the desertification of lands once LUSH, displacement of peoples, destruction of families and ecosystems, and a massive dry lake bed shedding noxious dust that once shared life. All of these atrocities, the repercussion of diverting water from the Eastern Sierras to Los Angeles.
Currently, we are aware that our home, all of Northern California, is facing the possibility of this same dry fate due to the over-extraction of groundwater. So, out of obligation and love, we commit to doing everything we can with the voices we have to sing into being a different story. Here now, we stand with AquAlliance, an organization of people who have been protecting Northern California waters for decades humbly and powerfully. We ask you to stand with us and contribute what you can to share their message widely. We hope you feel as inspired by their work as we do.

"River Under the River (The Aqualliance Song)" was written specifically for AquAlliance as a song to rally us to action, connecting us to the tenderness of heart while not shying away from the gravity of the moment we are in. We give credit to Clarissa Pinkola Estes for her story in Women Who Run With the Wolves, where she speaks of "Rio Abajo Rio, this River Beneath the River" as our inner creative channel, our Life Force.

We thank Barbara and Kathy of AquAlliance for their relentless generosity in sharing the California water story and steering the song's direction. We love this song, and we love that we now get to share it with you.
