In less than 2 months (end of September 2017!!), I will be travelling to Tanzania, Africa, to volunteer in a local radiology department for well over a month to help with hands-on training and education of local radiology technologists.
As some of you may know, I travelled to Tanzania in February 2017, as an outreach fellow for RAD-AID. My experience with the organization and with the lovely people of Tanzania has definitely been a turning point in my career. Therefore, I am self-funding my way back to help with the local breast cancer awareness month.
With a population of over 55 million people, Tanzanians have limited access to diagnostic exams, such as mammography. Although the incidence of breast cancer is lower in Tanzania than it is in Canada, women diagnosed with breast cancer in Tanzania are diagnosed in the late stages of the disease, making it difficult to treat. As such, half of Tanzanian women diagnosed with breast cancer will die from the disease.
The local Tanzanian hospital that RAD-AID is affiliated with, runs a Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign in October. My goals for this trip are to:
· Help with patient education;
· Improve the diagnostic quality of exams;
· Provide hands-on training to the imaging technologists;
· And bring current breast imaging references, books, and guides to the radiologist and the technologists, as well as other educational tools.
In order to alleviate the costs associated with airfare and the work visa, I need your help! The aim of this trip is to improve women’s health, all the while participating in the transfer of expertise and knowledge.
If the total amount of donations exceeds the total cost of airfare/work visa, I will in turn donate the excess to RAD-AID.org in order to support other projects that help provide access to radiology in impoverished and developing countries.

Dans moins de 2 mois (fin septembre 2017!), je m'envolerai pour la Tanzanie, en Afrique, afin de faire du bénévolat au sein d’un département de radiologie pendant plus d'un mois. J’y ferai de l’enseignement pratique et théorique auprès des professionnels de la santé de l'établissement.
En février 2017, j’y ai passé un mois afin de participer à ce type de projet. J’ai tellement adoré mon expérience avec l’organisme RAD-AID et l'humilité des Tanzaniens, que j’ai décidé d’y retourner à mes frais afin d’aider pendant le mois de Sensibilisation au Cancer du Sein.
La Tanzanie compte plus de 55 millions d'habitants, et ces gens ont un accès limité à des examens d’imagerie de qualité, tel que la mammographie. Bien que l’incidence du cancer du sein y soit moins élevé qu’au Canada, les Tanzaniennes reçoivent ce diagnostic souvent trop tard, lorsque le cancer est en stade avancé. Le traitement est donc difficile, et près de la moitié d'elles en meurent.
Afin d’aider l'établissement avec le Mois de Sensibilisation au Cancer du Sein, je souhaite :
· Établir un programme d'éducation sur la santé des seins pour les patientes (patients);
· Améliorer la qualité diagnostique des examens;
· Approfondir l’éducation et les techniques d’examens des technologues locaux;
· Et apporter du matériel éducatif, tel que des livres de référence et autres outils pédagogiques, aux technologues et au radiologiste.
Je sollicite donc votre aide afin de m’aider à assumer les coûts de ce voyage (transport et visa). Le but de ce voyage est d’aider à améliorer la santé des femmes, tout en partageant des connaissances et de l’expertise.
Si vos dons dépassent mon objectif, je remettrai le surplus à RAD-AID, afin que l’organisme puisse continuer à améliorer l’accessibilité aux services de radiologie dans des pays appauvris et en voie de développement.
