Porpel Primary School is a 40-minute drive from the town of Kampong Thom in the middle of Cambodia.

The school was originally built in 1994 and it closed in 2006 due to civil war.  Narith Van completed his primary teacher training and was asked by the Ministry of Education to reopen the school in 2013.  It commenced with four students and one teacher but now has 75 students and five teachers.  Children come from four local villages as far away as 5 kilometers.  They either walk, get a lift on the back of a motor bike or if they are lucky ride a push bike to school.

The school buildings are dilapidated and in desperate need of repair. The school is unlikely to obtain any funding through the Ministry of Education due to it's remote location.

In early 2018 four Montlaur co-workers visited Porpel Primary with Susie Lachal and were heartbroken to see the conditions these students are in and felt compelled to try and help.  The students at Porpel are incredibly happy and eager to learn, despite their difficult circumstances and learning conditions.  Narith is a very kind, humble and caring principal and has dedicated himself to the Porpel school, students and surrounding community.

We intend to rebuild the current dilapidated building on the existing slab at a cost of $40,000USD.  The chosen builder successfully delivered the school we built this year in Kuok Nguon village about 20 kilometers away.  Mr Nam Hong, a local builder, delivered our last building  with competitive pricing, on time, on budget and with an incredibly high standard of finish. The build will take approximately 5 months and construction will need to be scheduled around the wet season.
The remainder of the funds will go towards desks, chairs, blackboards, a new roof for the 'good' building and local project management and translation costs.
